First off, let me say that I love Melissa McCarthy, who plays Molly Flynn. She is beautiful and talented and I have felt that her previous roles as the "fat sidekick" were holding her back. When I heard she was going to get a lead role, I was thrilled! I thought, "Great! Finally a fat girl is gonna get put on a sitcom and get the hot husband!" I've gotten tired of seeing the fat or "plain looking" guy with the hot wife. Example: According to Jim, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond. Need I go on? Didn't think so.
Then I saw the premise of the show and got a little queasy. Not that I have anything against fat guys. I don't. Fat guys are great, and Billy Gardell is very handsome.
But I was afraid that instead of the show just being a funny show with a great lead actress, it was going to end up being a show where people gawked and thought "Ohh, how sweet! Fatties can fall in love too!" I wanted to be wrong. I desperately wanted to find out I was a cynical bitch. But guess what. While I might be a cynical bitch, I was not wrong about the show.
I am so disgusted. So, according to this show, if you are fat and want to find love then you should go to Over Eaters Anonymous. And if you are a fat woman, only fat guys are going to love you or find you attractive. Also, if you are a fat chick, the only way you will seem normal and loveable to the audience is if you have a drunk nympho for a mother and your sister is an idiotic, drug head Barbie Doll.
And couldn't they come up with a better name for a fat guy than "Mike BIGGS"? I mean seriously! And all of the "your so fat" type jokes got really old! Calling him a "UPS truck" or, "Autumn and 2 months of winter" and the jokes the mother (played by the fabulous Swoosie Kurtz who was wasted-in more ways than one-in this role) kept making about his weight. The sweater bit...funny, but that was all.
Now on to the ONLY good parts of the show: The Acting! Molly McCarthy is AWESOME! As always. I nearly spewed Mountain Dew out of my nose during the second episode where she was "drugged up" on Codiene and diet pills. And my heart did a flip at the end when "Mike" said "I'm going to marry that girl." My husband looked at me and grinned, because finally that show got something RIGHT! Sometimes it does only take one date to know you found THE ONE! That is something he and I know something about.
But, I digress. Mike and Molly Verdict:
LOVE LOVE LOVE Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell! Comic geniuses and beautiful people!
HATE HATE HATE the show Mike and Molly! CBS and the creators need to be flogged for perpetuating the "let's make fun of fatty" stereotypes. Why couldn't this be a "Lets laugh WITH them, no matter how fat they are" show? Why, oh, why?
I will shut up now, but must leave you with this question:
How will our children ever learn to accept themselves and others for who they are if we keep making it OK to laugh at fat people just because they are fat?
