Review: Chobits Issue 1 (Minor Spoilers)

Chobits, by CLAMP

An Observer.
Chobits is hugely popular amongst both Western and Eastern anime and manga fans. It is written and illustrated by CLAMP, an all female team who have done other successful titles such as Card Captors and XXXholic.

In a nut shell the plot is about a boy named Hideki who has just moved to Tokyo from his parents farm. He's pretty much a country bumpkin and divides his time between studying in Cram school (Summer school for those who didn't get into Uni on their first try), working at a local restaurant and dreaming about girls and porn. In the world Hideki lives in everyone who can afford one has very advanced computers called 'Persicoms'. They come in many varieties from those small enough to fit on a keychain to the more common ones which look and act like human beings. Hideki wants one of these more than anything but on a student's wage he cant afford one. One night after work he stumbles upon a Persicom in a trash can, how convenient! Turns out she's had her memory wiped and she knows nothing so Hideki will have to teach her the ways of the world! He names her Chi as that is the only thing she can say.

Ok so other than the slightly predictable plot this is actually a fairly well written story. It's cute and innocent and there is just enough humor relating to Hideki's dirty mind to keep things interesting. Clamp is known for well written stories and Chobits is no exception. On the subject of artwork, again as usual Clamp comes up with the goods. Chobits is well drawn and the pages flow nicely.

All in all it's a really good read and a nice way to waste an hour. I'm looking forward to getting issue 2. CHIIIIIIIIIIIII.

A 'Persicom' is a personal computer in the shape of a person. The smallest can fit in the palm of you hand and only perform minor tasks while the more expensive models are human sized.
