When I opened the box and poured myself a bowl I noticed that about 50 percent of the cereal was the plain rice and corn cereal while the other 50 percent was the same checked rice and corn squares, but they had a chocolate coating. Eager to have chocolate for breakfast I tried one of the chocolate covered ones and it was delicious. It did not have an overly candy flavor to it like the other chocolate cereals, instead it had just a hint of milk chocolate flavor. The other plain checked squares tasted like the original Chex cereal I have loved all my life. Mixed together I think they make a great combination. I can not think of a better way to justify having chocolate for breakfast.
I knew that when I added the soy milk that Chex is normally crisp and crunchy, there were no changes there. Do to the fact that the cereal was evenly divided between plain & chocolate covered squares just about every bite had an enjoyable hint of milk chocolate without being too sugary. The one thing I wondered about though was if the soy milk left at the bottom of the bowl was going to have that odd chemically taste to it left by the average chocolate kid's cereal. After finishing my so very tasty bowl of Chocolate Chex I was pleased to find that the milk had only a slight chocolate colored tint to it, most of the chocolate had stayed on the cereal squares. I was also pleased to find that drinking the last little sips of tinted soy milk was very pleasant as it had just a hint of real chocolate flavor to it very similar to a cup of chocolate milk.
My children have never had any of the character advertised overly sweet cereals with enough sugar for 15 people in every bowl. Occasionally we will get Honey Nut Cheerios or Honey Bunches of Oats, but that is about as sweet I allow my children to have. New Chocolate Chex only as 8 grams of sugar. While that is 2 grams of sugar more than Honey Bunches of Oats, it is one gram less than a serving of Honey Nut Cheerios. I feel good enough in the lower amount of sugar in Chocolate Chex to add it to my very short list of sweet cereal that my children get as occasional treat. We will be enjoying Chocolate Chex as a family.
New Chocolate Chex is a delicious cereal that is low in sugar and high in quality chocolate taste. I like to snack on dry cereal throughout the day and this chocolate cereal is a great afternoon snack to conquer my sweet tooth as well as a tasty breakfast. Who could ask for any better reason to have chocolate for breakfast than New Chocolate Chex!
