Review of Christian Brothers Brandy

Matt Whisman
Claiming itself to have been established in California's San Joaquin Valley in 1882, The Christian Brothers Brandy produces three grades of this fine and traditionally French liquor: V.S., or "Very Special," V.S.O.P., or "Very Special Old Pale," and X.O., or "Extra Old." Two other beverages are produced, including a clear liquor line called "Frost" and an egg-nog and brandy mix called "Holiday Nog."

Historically, the Christian Brothers began distilling brandy to profit their religious order's school and educational program. In traditional pot stills similar to those used in the production of cognac, mashes of California grape varietals are distilled into a high-proof liquor, then aged in American oak barrels for a period ranging between three and ten years. This time spent in the barrel will smoothen the otherwise harsh alcoholic bite of any spirit, in addition to layering complex flavors upon those already imbued by the grapes.

The first of the three standard brandies, "Very Special," is aged the least, and thus costs less than others produced by the company. A value-sized 1750-mL bottle should cost no more than $20, while only a fifth (750 mL) of "Extra Old" or "Very Special Old Pale" brandy will cost at least twice that amount. These higher-priced spirits are better candidates for enjoying straight, especially from a glass brandy snifter intended for cognac. Warm, oak flavoring compliments the also fruity taste and woody nose that concentrates in the drinkware. Some individuals may want to combine the cheaper brandy with different mixers; often-used recipes include Christian Brothers and sweet vermouth or Christian Brothers and apple cider.

Also produced by the Christian Brothers are two "project products," including an egg-nog and brandy blend, as well as a spirit titled 'Frost.' 'Frost' is a clear spirit that undergoes eighteen months of oak aging before bottling, and is recommended especially for using with favorite mixers such as juice, club soda, or soft drinks. 'Holiday Nog,' an egg-nog and brandy blend, is available during the winter holiday season, for the price of $6-$10. Christian Brothers Frost costs, on average, $12 per 750-mL bottle.

For excellent California brandy at a favorable price, the Christian Brothers company produces unparalleled products of quality and taste that cannot be recommended highly enough; of course, they should always be enjoyed responsibly.
