Review of Clancy's Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips

Brad Kamer

Potato chips are the reliable partner to any quality lunch sandwich whether it is a deli sub, burger, or chicken sandwich. Add a pickle to the group and the meal is perfect. As much as I usually dine on regular potato chips, there are those times when I find it necessary to mix things up and go with a flavored potato chip. I recently purchased a bag of Clancy's Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips at Aldi to go with our weekend lunches. I have tried Clancy's original potato chip with the experience being "average" at best. The result of the sour cream chips are another story

Nutrition

Clancy's chips are sold in a large green and yellow bag which holds eleven ounces of chips. There are no Trans fats present in the chips, though each serving has eleven grams of fat and 160 calories. The calorie count is pretty average when considering that is approximately the same amount of calories in the single serving bags sold by Lay's. From a nutrition stand point, I didn't see any surprises by this potato chip manufacturer. Potato chips are not the most nutritious things to eat so nutritional pros and cons did not sway my opinion one way or another with Clancy's.

Texture and Taste

As I poured a small serving of chips on my plate I noticed several broken bits. I am not sure if this is how they came off the assembly line or were mishandled in shipping. Those larger chips that I did eat were questionable. When I picked up each chip, there seemed to be a residue or salty powder which I am guessing is the flavors and salt combined to give this food that sour cream and onion flavor. The flavor was average as I did pick up the onion flavor, but could not get past the saw dust texture present on each chip. Each chip had a degree of greasiness though no more than what I would experience eating a Lay's or Ruffles.

Price

This large eleven ounce bag of chips was an extremely low price of $1.39. Those competing brands of Sour Cream and Onion (or chive) chips can easily run as high as three dollars for similar size bag. However, the price does not seem like such a steal when two thirds of the chips in the bag were broken into smaller pieces. I would also gladly pay between two and three dollars for a flavored potato chip that did not have an interesting powder coating that seemed to rub off onto the fingers with each bite. I rate Clancy's sour cream and onion potato chips a weak buy.
