Review of Classic 80's Music Album: Cyndi Lauper and Her True Colors

I grew up listening to Cyndi Lauper's music. I remember watching her music videos, her crazy colorful hairstyles, clothing, makeup and dance bring life to the MTV videos. She was different from anyone else I had ever seen. She was a fun artist to listen to and watch, but it was her second album True Colors released in 1986 that made me a true and loyal fan.

True Colors showed the world how serious and talented an artist Cyndi Lauper's could be and is. Her true colors really shined through in this album and it helped showcase her fantastic vocals. It's the album that proves Cyndi can sing anything, a romantic ballad, pop, rock music, and so on and still make it enjoyable to listen to.

The musical instruments, (the drums in "True Colors" and "Iko Iko") and the lyrics accompanied with her brilliant vocals just make the album so much better. Though critics may argue that the keyboard and other 80's instruments may drown out Cyndi Lauper's voice, I beg to differ. This music was created in the 80's and as such sounds 80's. That is not a bad thing and it does not make the album cheesy, at least it does not make the entire album cheesy. There are a few songs like, "Boy Blue" and "One Track Mind", that could use a musical instrument update, but songs like "True Color" and "What's Going On" have nothing cheesy about them and more than make up for anything cheesy about the album. Listening to the album now I can only recall good memories of where and when I was when listening to her music. Cheesy does not come to mind.

Of the album the title song "True Colors", written by the songwriting team Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, is my favorite. I can play it repeatedly on my Ipod, my computer or my radio and I never get bored of it. It speaks to me deeply. Between the beautiful lyrics, Cyndi's amazing vocals and the enhanced drum beat at the beginning and end of this song the song is an amazingly peaceful sound filled with meaningful words of acceptance and happiness of others and oneself. Take a look at the chorus of the song to see what I mean, "But I see your true colors shining through / I see your true colors and that's why I love you / So don't be afraid to let them show". Still "True Colors" is not the only song on the album that makes the album worth listening to. Songs like "Iko Iko", "What's Going On", "Calm Inside the Storm" and "Maybe He'll Know" are all great songs to listen to and what I believe made Cyndi Lauper one of my favorite artists of all times.
