Review of CoCo Key Indoor Water Park Near Columbus, Ohio

Angela Kimball
My family and I recently made the trip to Newark, Ohio, near Columbus, to visit the CoCo Key indoor water park. We've been to other CoCo Key indoor water parks, so we were eager to see how well this one would compare.

Attractions

The CoCo Key indoor water park had a variety of attractions available for children of all ages, as well as the young at heart. Several waterslides were open and running for guests 48 inches or taller. Guests under 48 inches tall may be permitted to use the slides with an adult. Smaller waterslides were also available for the younger visitors to the waterpark.

A cozy area was available to lazily float down a mock river on a large inflated tube with handles. Some tubes were available for two. We found this to be convenient and frequently used by couples or parents with smaller children.

A hot tub was open to adults only and this was a fabulous feature for those over 18 that wanted a relaxing break from the kids. If the entire family wanted to relax together in warmer waters, you could step into the family hot tub. No lifeguards were watching this area, but this attraction was surrounded by a latching gate for security and safety of the guests.

An area was open to play basketball in the water. Picture a large pool to enjoy combined with one of your favorite sports. The swimming pool associated with this activity was about 3 feet 6 inches deep, so probably best when used by older kids and adults.

For the younger visitors, a pirate ship play land has invaded CoCo Key. Small waterslides are fun for the little ones. They land into a pool about 18 inches deep. A miniature version of the water-basketball is also a great way for the smaller guests to have a great time at CoCo Key indoor water park.

Who could forget the big bucket? An enormous bucket fills with water over the course of several minutes, then a warning bell sounds and you are in for a treat. The giant bucket tips over and the numerous gallons of water spills out and onto a platform then falls to the ground soaking everyone in its path.

Safety

Lifeguards were on duty at nearly every single attraction at CoCo Key. I was truly impressed when a lifeguard was tested during our trip. As someone passed by, they tossed a mock baby into the water to see how the lifeguard on duty would respond. Right in front of me, the lifeguard briefly blew her whistle to alert the other lifeguards and dove in after the doll. To me, this shows just how seriously CoCo Key takes safety. I've been to numerous pools and waterparks and this is the first time I've personally witnessed a test such as this to keep the lifeguard on their toes and alert.

When the attraction calls for guests to be a certain height, I assure you that the lifeguards on duty will stick to the regulations. If you are just a tad short, wait to make the trip, because guests will be measured. My children are right at the line for one of the slides and they were all measured before they were allowed to play. If the child does not meet the proper height requirement, they may be offered a lifejacket and allowed to participate. This will vary by attraction.

Snacks

Food is nearby at CoCo Key water park just a few paces from the slippery, wet fun. Pizza Hut has plenty of pizzas and breadsticks for all to munch on and if you aren't in the mood for that, snack on an ice cream cone instead. A soft pretzel or Popsicle is yet another option if you want a snack.

Warmth

CoCo Key water park in Newark, Ohio near Columbus is nice and warm. Even when the weather outside is cold and breezy, the weather inside CoCo Key is delightfully warm and cozy. I'm the type that is generally cold and I was rather comfortable. With little ones walking around wet, you don't want them to get a chill. This won't be a problem at CoCo Key. The water is typically fairly warm, too.

Seating

Seating at CoCo Key water park is somewhat limited, but we were always able to find a place to sit and leave our towels or shoes. At times, a spot to sit wasn't obvious and we needed to look around, but the seat was always right around the corner. Chairs are comfortable when taking a break from the pools and slides.

Other Amenities

Changing rooms and bathrooms are conveniently located at CoCo Key. Lockers are available for a small fee at this location to store your items, but we didn't find this service necessary for our family on this visit. Towels are passed out upon request if you don't feel like dragging yours along with you, but occasionally, you may need to wait if they are still in the dryer, but this seems worth it since the wait is minimal and the towels are toasty and warm.

Value

Tickets to CoCo Key water park are available with a hotel stay at the adjacent hotel, Cherry Valley Lodge. Packages are frequently offered to save a lot when staying at Cherry Valley Lodge. If you are interested in just visiting for the day, I would highly recommend ordering your tickets and day passes online. You can frequently save quite a bit of cash by doing this. With a day pass, you can expect to pay about $20 per person or take advantage of a night's stay and four passes for approximately $110 on special. These prices make CoCo Key water park a great value for the family.

CoCo Key indoor water park rates a definite five stars out of five. The location and attractions are perfect for the entire family. Safety is of the utmost importance at CoCo Key and the prices can't be beat.

Both of my daughters sold Girl Scout cookies to earn this trip and it has been a nightmare. The passes given to the troop were denied for three different reasons, three different times. Either the park was rented out with no way of us knowing this until getting there, or because of it being a weekend it was too crowded and we were denied access, or it was a slow day during the week and they were closing early. After our third attempt we finally got in. This was a Saturday and it was crowded. The place was so crowded that they had no lockers available for rent therefore everyone was taking tables and chairs to harbor their belongings and making them unavailable for you to use while eating. The kiddie pool was ice cold and several attempts were made to bring up the temp but it never worked therefore my 2 year old and I had to sit poolside because it was just too dangerous to be with all the larger kids in the middle island. The lazy river was extra crowded and it took at least ten minutes
