Review: Code Monkeys, an Animated Series on Spike TV

What do you think really separates an animated show from the other competition in the TV world? Is it the storyline, animation, or the characters? Well, if you are looking for a show that stands out from all the rest, you should definitely think about checking out G4's "Code Monkeys" on Wednesday nights.

Filled with tons of humor, the storyline of "Code Monkeys" basically revolves around the owner and employees of the gaming company Gameavision. Although the show does have some type of storyline, this show is really meant to provoke laughs instead of engaging audiences in an in depth story. If you do decide to watch "Code Monkeys", however, I really believe you'll have a difficult time not laughing at the antics of the Gameavision employees, especially Dave.

"Code Monkeys" is absolutely full of unique and insane characters. The wackiest of all the characters is most likely the slacker employee Dave and the Gameavision owner Mr. Larrity. Driven by chaos and his love to annoy his fellow co-workers, Dave seems to cause the most problems at Gameavision. A great example is when Dave decides to put a urinal in the company's kitchen. Why you may ask? It helps him watch his burrito cook in the microwave while he pees. And yes, he is this crazy. As for the money grubber boss Mr. Larrity, this insane Texan loves to solve disputes with potential business partners by wrestling. Another interesting fact about Mr. Larrity is his vision for "remodeling" the company. For example, shortly after buying Gameavision, Mr. Larrity demoed the ladies bathroom with no regard for the women employees in order to simply expand the men's bathroom. Fortunately, there are a few somewhat normal characters to balance out the crazed lunatics. One such character is Dave's best friend Jerry. Unlike Dave, Jerry takes his game designing job seriously and attempts to actually work instead of slacking off. Due to the various characters, this show truly has a great mixture of personalities that many individuals will really enjoy.

Even though "Code Monkeys" is comedy based, the element I love the most about this show is the animation style. Animated like a classic Nintendo game, the animation adds to the entertainment, uniqueness, and likability of the show. I especially found this to be true when a particular character gets beat up or knocked out and just lies on the ground motionless. It just brings back to mind the great elements that can only be found in classic games of Nintendo. Another aspect that I thought was really cool is when "Code Monkeys" incorporates game features into the actual show such as a health bar, bonus points, and power ups. The concept of pausing, like many players do in a video games, just before a commercial break is one such example and only adds to the hilariousness of the show.

"Code Monkeys" is a great show to watch, but being rated TV 14 proves that the show is not for everyone, especially for younger viewers. Because the show does display and use profanity, nudity, and toilet humor, the show seems more aimed toward older teens and young adults. If you don't mind such subject matters though, then you should be able to find quite a lot of humor in "Code Monkeys".

The humor based "Code Monkeys" seems to really set itself apart from other animated shows with its' high level of humor, unique animation, and wacky characters. Personally, I love the show, and I would highly recommend this show to other individuals who are looking for a good laugh. And, do you really think you can resist seeing cartooned poop blown up in a microwave?
