Review: College Farm Organic Hard Candy

Strawberries & Cream and Chocolate Mint

Genie Walker
Earlier this year while scanning the shelves in the health food section of Kroger's for more gluten free items, I found College Farm's organic hard candies for $2.29 for a 4.75 oz bag. They sold two flavors: Strawberry & Cream and Vienna Roast Coffee; since I'm not a coffee drinker I only bought the strawberry & cream candies. Totally delicious!!!! I was disappointed that they only sold those two flavors. I found on the internet that College Farm has four other flavors: Chocolate Mint, Vanilla Caramel, True Mint, and Luscious Lemon. Recently, I walked into my local health food store and saw a bag of College Farm's Chocolate Mint flavor for $2.79. I couldn't buy it fast enough. I thought I like the Strawberry & Cream, but when I put the Chocolate Mint into my mouth I knew I had I found my new favorite flavor.

The Strawberry & Cream hard candies are a soft red color with a taste like a super sweet strawberry and the candy feels a little bit sticky. The Chocolate Mint flavor is a deep chocolate brown and has a strong chocolate taste with a hint of mint. These candies taste great and I've learned to buy one bag at a time, and then put them in a bowl in the sunroom. Why the sunroom? I don't go in there very often so I forget the candies are there. It's the only way I can make the bag last more than a weekend. Each bag has about 24 candies in it and the candy itself is about the size of a butterscotch hard candy.

The Simon Candy Company in Elizabethtown, PA at 31 N Spruce St. makes these outstanding candies at the College Farm, hence the name. According to their website and their packaging the farm got it's name because Charles Simon, the founder of the company, donated land to Elizabethtown College which is next door. College Farm is surrounded on three sides by the college. According to their website Simon Candy Company has been in business for over 50 years, but they have only been making these particular candies since 2003.

Both are made with organic ingredients with no added chemicals or artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. All these candies are free of gluten, nuts, soy, eggs and GMO's. Not only has the company taken special care of the ingredients but they have made the clear wrapper that is around the candies from cornstarch. If you have a corn allergy don't worry on their website they say that the heat of the process of making the wrappers eliminates all allergens.
Bottom line: These candies are excellent and I do recommend them.
