Review of the Crucial 2 GB DDR2 200-pin Memory Module

R. J. Gardiner
I own a netbook that uses DDR2 200-pin memory (PC2-5300 type), and it came with 1 GB installed. I finally decided to max out the memory by getting a 2 GB module. I chose the Crucial brand and have it installed in my netbook as I type this. Here are my observations:

I timed the startup for my computer with the installed 1 GB module and found it took 4 minutes for the computer to load Windows XP and all my programs. When I installed the 2 GB module, it loaded everything in 2 minutes and 40 seconds, an improvement of roughly 40%.

When it comes to gaming, netbooks are fine for light gaming, and the Crucial module definitely improved the frame rate of the browser-based games I play. The load times for the games was sped up as well, again by about 40%. The flicker sometimes seen in these games was gone as well.

Download times were improved, though not as much as the startup speed and game speeds. I tested a program that took me 5 minutes to download using the 1 GB module and was able to download it in a little over 4 minutes with the 2 GB module installed.

While the added memory improves a lot of things, some things are unaffected. The quality of the graphics is the same, and the sound quality is unchanged. The speed at which sound and video are played is improved, however, to the tune of about 40-50%, depending on the site I am on.

There have been no memory-related issues or errors, and the module was recognized by my netbook without any problems. I have used Crucial products in the past and have never been disappointed by their performance, and this 2 GB module is no exception.

I would recommend this module to anybody looking to upgrade their netbook and get it to run a significant amount faster. It should noticeably improve your computer's performance.
