Review of Cytomax Ready to Drink Protein Drinks

While most people get adequate amounts of protein from the food they eat, others can benefit from a protein drink. Since I had gastric bypass surgery a couple years ago, I need a bit more protein than the average person but I eat less than the average person, so I used protein drinks sometimes to make sure I'm getting all the protein I need. I've tried many different brands, including Cytomax ready to drink protein drinks. In fact, Cytomax is what I was given in the hospital following my surgery. Cytomax is the consistency of water and is considered a clear liquid, so it's suitable for post-surgical patients and others on a clear liquid diet.

Cytomax ready to drink protein drinks come in single serving plastic bottles. It's a convenient way to get your protein; just grab a bottle and go. I recommend keeping them in the refrigerator; I found they taste much better when they are very cold.

Each 20 ounce bottle contains 160 calories, 40 grams of protein and no sugar, fat or carbohydrates. The protein comes from whey protein isolate, a type of protein that is easily absorbed.

They come in a variety of flavors, including orange tangerine, tropical fruit and watermelon. The flavor reminds me a little of Gatorade but they have a strong metallic aftertaste that I don't like. I tried to disguise the aftertaste by diluting the drinks with water and by mixing them with flavored drinks like Crystal Light and lemonade, but nothing covered up the metallic taste. I had purchased a whole case of watermelon flavored Cytomax drinks and a whole case of orange tangerine flavored Cytomax drinks, and ended up throwing most of both cases away because I just couldn't take that metallic aftertaste.

Despite the fact that these protein drinks are a good source of protein, I cannot really recommend them due to the unpleasant aftertaste. If you'd like to try then, I suggest finding a health food store or vitamin shop that sells individual bottles and trying one before investing in a whole case to make sure you can tolerate the taste.
