Review - Dale & Peakot

Dale & Peakot is a flash animation action/platformer game created by Newgrounds.com user JuicyBeast. Additional audio is by Brian Holmes. This adventure game was submitted to Newgrounds.com on November 25, 2009 and won a Daily 3rd Place award on November 26, 2009 as well as a Weekly 5th Place award on December 1, 2009.

Game Background

Dale is a farmer who lives in the valley of Farmina, where he tends to his many hens with the help of his best friend Peakot. One night, Dale and Peakot are awaken by the sound of coyotes stealing the precious hens. However, a very special feather was left behind. This feather allows Dale to control Peakot as if they were one. Armed with this special ability, the dynamic duo set off to rescue their hens.

Controls

Press A to move left and D to move right. Press W to jump.
Press Spacebar to fire.
Press R to reload.
Click somewhere to have Peakot fly there.
Double-click to have Peakot release a powerful blast of energy.
Press P to pause game and go to a very helpful menu, where you can toggle game quality and sound and view Peakot's equipment. You can also view your in-game achievements here.

Gameplay

By controlling Dale with the keyboard, walk around and collect items that will help you on your quest. You can collect feathers that will help you open special chests that can contain armor for Peakot. The armor has special abilities that can further help you on your quest. There are a total of 9 armors that can be collected: 3 helmets, 3 shields, and 3 types of footwear. Along the way, there will be many obstacles, including bad guys. Shoot them down to score points and possibly get meat for health. You can also collect golden eggs to temporarily increase the score you get from killing bad guys. Get Dale and Peakot to the end to rescue your hens.

At the end of each level, you will receive a level summary that displays the following:
-number of points gained in level from collecting eggs
-points based on life remaining
-points based on chests found
-total score
-best record score

You can load the game later if you wish to continue from where you left off. There are two game slots that can be used.

Game Review

Dale & Peakot is a fun adventure game for everyone. The gameplay makes use of both keyboard and mouse, which can be challenging for those who lack dexterity. Utilizing both keyboard and mouse makes the game more interesting than the usual adventure game. Also, the many upgrades that can be obtained for Peakot keeps players playing to see what special abilities Peakot can get.

Dale & Peakot scores a 10/10 for great gameplay and visual/audio appeal.
