Review of Daredevil (GBA)

S.R.
Daredevil was a largely ignored video game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. To date, I believe this is the only solo game Daredevil's ever had. You can play as him in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance but that's more of a team game. As such, this game is highly recommended to Daredevil fans. To the others however, this still represents a very nice game that you have to get into and really give a chance. Let's talk about it.

Story : The Kingpin of Crime has framed you for murder. Bullseye is out to murder you. Elektra wants revenge for the murder she thought you commit. And Kingpin is waiting for you, atop his skyscraper. You are Daredevil, and it's your job to rid the streets of Hell's Kitchen of crime forever. Not bad.

Graphics : The graphics are well done. The backgrounds look decent and there's nothing too annoying about them. You can see most things fairly clearly. The levels are all quite big and there's many nooks and crannies you can look into if you wish to explore. The character sprites are all nice and are animated well. Daredevil looks good, as do Elektra and the villains.

Sound : The music is quite good. Not something that really catches you ear, but good nonetheless. It does fit the game well and isn't distracting. It's nice, ambient music that gets the job done. The sound effects are decent, you hear all sorts of nice thumps and cracks for when you're attacking or being attacked. Sound also plays a part in knowing when your hidden baton meter will run out. You hear a slight ting before it does. Overall, a good effort musically.

Game play : The game play is decent, leaning more towards the good side. However, it should be made clear that this is a very hard game. It's not a beat em up where you can just run up to people and start attacking them. If you do, you will die quite fast. You have to pay attention to the animation frames of your opponents and counter them appropriately.

The controls aren't very fluid or responsive overall, but you do get used to them. When you first play you'll have to learn the timing of some of your actions, as not all of them are instant. It's a bit tricky but you'll get it with practice.

The most interesting feature is the ''radar mode'' Daredevil possesses. Unfortunately, this is mostly just for show as you gain no fighting ability when it's active. Instead, you are able to see hidden items. Disappointing. Overall, I'd say the game's very difficult and those not looking for a challenge should avoid this game entirely.

Re playability : The game has less than 25 levels overall, though some are quite long. Overall, if you really like this game it could be a decent re play. Otherwise, most of you won't even make it through the game the first time.

Overall: 7/10. An underrated game that's satisfactory in most areas besides the challenge.
