Review of the Delaware Museum of Natural History: A Perfect Museum for Kids!

S.B.
We visited the Delaware Museum of Natural History on a Sunday morning with our three year old daughter. The museum is located at: 4840 Kennett Pike (Route 52), P.O. Box 3937, Wilmington, DE 19807. The museum website is: www.delmnh.org. The museum hours are: Monday - Saturday 9:30 to 4:30 and Sunday 12:00PM to 4:30PM. The admission fees are as follows: Seniors $6, Adults $7, Children $5 and under the age of 2 years old is free. I am going to provide my review of the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

We explored the museum on one of the free Sunday morning admission days. The free admission is several times a year and is sponsored by PNC bank. You can find out more information here: www.delmnh.org. My husband, daughter and I all got free admission to the museum. The museum also has free parking. From the moment we arrived, my daughter loved it. The grounds are beautiful and there are many sculptures of animals around the campus and parking lot. Her favorite was probably the humongous bear statue!

When you enter the museum you will see that it is not very large, but will entertain children for about an hour to two hours. The museum features a dinosaur section featuring some nice giant displays of dinosaur bones. The museum also has amazing lifelike displays of birds and mammals. My daughter would not go too close to their giant polar bear - perhaps he looked a little too real!

Another neat feature of the museum is they had several employees walking around with snakes and other reptile creatures for the guests to touch. We were able to touch a beautiful yellow snake and get up close to ask questions about it.

The museum also features a beautiful shell collection. There is one spot in the museum where the floor has glass on it and you can see a diorama of fish and ocean life below. Our daughter wanted to sit on the floor and crawl over this for a long time. It was very neat!

There is much to see outside the museum too. There is a butterfly garden. In addition to the butterfly garden there are two nature trails. Both trails are about a mile long and are nicely cleared. The one path leads to a bird exhibit and the other one goes to an outdoor classroom. We found both paths to be perfect to walk with our young daughter.

If you are looking for a neat little museum to explore, check out the Delaware Museum of Natural History. It makes for a perfect day trip! You might even be able to visit for free if you go on the PNC free admission days!
