My experience with Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville, Tennessee began at about 1 a.m. one morning. I woke up with my very first toothache. The excruciating pain in my jaw was unyielding. No matter what I tried nothing was working. I knew I needed to see a dentist. The problem was that I didn't have one.
After a couple of hours of walking the floor I turned to the internet for help. My search for "emergency dentists in Knoxville, TN" brought up the website for Dental Works. Intrigued, I decided to take a look and what I found made me happy.
For starters, the website is user friendly. There is information on services, insurance, payments and articles on overall dental health education. What caught my attention was the toll-free 24/7 phone number for appointments and being able to request appointments by email for later visits.
I checked the Better Business Bureau ranking for the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. After seeing the A+ rating I decided to give them a try.
It only took a couple of rings before the friendly (and sympathetic) Dental Works agent answered. She took my information and was able to schedule me for an appointment to see the dentist later that day.
She couldn't answer my insurance questions but did say that Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville accepts most major insurance plans. She also said that someone from the insurance department would be in touch with me later. The call took about 10 minutes from start to finish.
Later, the Dental Works insurance department called with more details. They gave me a rough estimate and told me what to expect at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville. We also talked about payment options. They take cash, check and debit/credit cards in addition to a financing plan through another company.
I arrived at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville about 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. The forms asked the regular questions about medications, last dental visit, which dentist and basic contact information. They also copied my insurance card.
There were several chairs in the lobby and magazines. The Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville has the pretty standard medical office furniture. It might have even been comfortable if my tooth hadn't been killing me.
There were no surprises in the exam room.. It was pretty much as I expected but what did surprise me was the staff. The Dental Works staff was friendly, helpful and sympathetic. X-rays had to be taken and the staff person did her best to avoid hurting me. (It didn't work but I appreciated the gesture.)
It took about 20 minutes for the dentist to be able to see me at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville. I could hear him working with another patient and understood about the wait.
Exam rooms are open so I could see staff going up and down the hallway. Almost all of them asked if I was doing ok or if they could get me anything. I wasn't and they couldn't but it was nice that they checked.
When the dentist came in he took one look at the x-ray and gave me the bad news. My tooth was hurting because of an abscess. He said I needed an expensive root canal and crown. It turns out that instead of doing root canals at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. they refer everyone to the Turkey Creek location in Knoxville.
This news did not make my day but the visit wasn't over. While the dentist wrote out prescriptions for the antibiotic and magic pain pills the front staff at this Dental Works office went to work. They pulled up my insurance information and gave me a cost estimate in just a couple of minutes.
I left my calendar at home and couldn't commit to an appointment time without checking it. The staff made sure that I had the number for the other Dental Works in Knoxville as well as a business card for their office. A staff member also gave me a copy of the x-ray in hopes of cutting some of my dental cost for the next visit.
Overall, I thought that the staff at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville did a superb job. From the receptionists to the hygienists the staff was consistently kind and seemed to have it all together.
However, I was not pleased to be referred to the other office and I was not pleased that the dentist at the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville didn't look in my mouth. The diagnosis was accurate, but I would have felt more valued as a patient if he did more than just look at the x-ray before announcing his diagnosis.
Over the next couple of weeks I took the antibiotic, felt better and had the root canal done. Then, I asked the Dental Works on Clinton Hwy. in Knoxville, Tennessee to transfer my records to the other location.
