Review: Dyson DC24 All Floor Vacuum Cleaner

This Vacuum Sucks! but in a Good Way

J. Darling
You might be familiar with the Dyson Ball vacuum commercials, you know the ones where they hype up the fact that the machine turns on a ball for easier maneuverability, something that most other vacuums can't do. After having to purchase a new Bissell every few years because they wear out so easily, I decided to splurge on a Dyson.

According to the website, the DC24 model has Root Cyclone Technology, which claims to prevent the loss of suction. This sucker also has 115 constant air watts, and a washable HEPA filtration system. It's a compact upright at 43.3 in. x 11.0 in. x 13.7 in. (HxWxD) and it weighs 11.65 pounds. For around $400, you can purchase this vacuum, which comes with a 5 year warranty.

Advantages: The DC24 has been well-worth the price so far, and I have owned mine for around one year. The slim design allows you to clean around and under most tables and other furniture with ease. The brush tool works great for getting dog hair off of my microfiber sofa. Because I have both carpet and wood floors, I can easily vacuum the whole house with the switch of a button. I can tell the machine is doing its job by the contents of the 0.19 gallon bin when I'm through cleaning. The handle is collapsible, making it smaller and easier to store.

Disadvantages: The reversible wand and hose used to reach higher places was a little tricky to get used to at first. The cord on the machine is only 20 ft. long, so I feel like I have to unplug and replug more than I did with other vacuums. The biggest disadvantage of the DC24 involves availability of replacement filters. There are two filters on the machine that should be washed in warm water monthly. The instructions advise you to wait at least 24 hours, or until the filters dry, before putting them back in. It usually takes at least two days for the filters to dry, which is a big drawback because I use my vacuum daily. For around $42 the Dyson online store sells the filters (that's the total for both of them), but the Target where I bought my vacuum from doesn't sell them.

If this vacuum lasts me for several more years and continues to give me great results, I would definitely say the $400 price is money well-spent.
