Review: E.L.F. Minty Lip Gloss in New York

Consider this the weirdest benefit for a lip gloss, via E.L.F.'s website: "The sheer glossy color conditions lips with a minty fresh taste." In fact, it even claims to freshen your breath while giving your lips a wonderful sheen, which may qualify it as the weirdest lip gloss ever.

Granted, I don't search for lip glosses that freshen my breath, nor do I have any desire to taste my lip gloss in the first place, but apparently this is a selling point of E.L.F.'s latest lip gloss, called their Studio Minty Lip Gloss. I chose the New York shade, a sort of hot pink with a slight glimmer.

The Application
Here's something I don't like about E.L.F.'s Minty Lip Gloss--the application stick is horrible. The stick itself is an elongated brush that barely picks up any color, and you'll find yourself swirling this brush around in hopes of getting some lip gloss. It took me several labored applications to get it to cover my entire lip.

With that said, don't let the color fool you into thinking this is a deep, rich lip gloss. It's actually fairly translucent on the lips and has a slight shimmer--not enough to produce any rich color, in my experience. For some people the translucent color may be a good thing; for others, this may be incredibly disappointing. I was a bit disappointed with the color, although it did give me a lips a slight pink sheen.

And for the record, yes, it does taste minty.

The Wearability
Unlike E.L.F.'s other lip gloss products, this gloss doesn't have good staying power. The color shifts around a lot, so if you're not careful, it may smudge onto your upper lip, which can make you look downright comical or possibly inebriated. It also did not moisturize my lips, and oftentimes my lips were chapped. Not a good thing.

The Price
Here's an interesting thing about its price--on its website, it advertises the Minty Lip Gloss in New York for $3.00. However, I paid only a dollar for this lip gloss, thanks to my local Dollar Store, which has a limited supply of E.L.F. cosmetics. Compared to the average E.L.F. product, $3.00 is pretty steep, but it appears some stores may sell it for less.

Still, I don't think the price will win me over. There's a lot I don't like about this lip gloss: its poor wearability, the poor application brush and the lack of color. For right now, I don't think this lip gloss is a keeper in my makeup bag.
