Matte foundations are the devil--or at least they hate me specifically. When I brought up my foundation woes to a fellow friend, she suggested I go with something less intense, such as a tinted moisturizer. I decided to give it a whirl. One Target visit later and I returned home with E.L.F.'s latest moisturizing product--the E.L.F. Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 in Porcelain. And so the challenge began.
The Application: The Good and Bad
Foundation is a bit thick, but this tinted moisturizer was more creamy and had a hint of color. Application was a snap; simply smooth it onto your face and blend it through. E.L.F. claims its formula is "lightweight and hydrating", which I'll have to agree with--there's nothing heavy or unpleasant about this formula. The heavier the foundation, the worse I look, but this formula didn't weigh down my skin. That's a good thing.
As for its coverage, there are a few issues with E.L.F.'s tinted moisturizer. First, it doesn't exactly even out your skin tone if you have blemishes or acne scars. I'm not covered in acne scars, but I have very faint scars that line my chin. It couldn't even cover these faint scars, which doesn't really speak much for its coverability.
Second, the moisturizer smudges around and won't stay in place, so it's not exactly a reliable product for making your skin tone more even. Although it did even out my skin tone, it was a temporary effect, and my skin started looking blotchy after an hour or two of wear.
What I Love About E.L.F.'s Tinted Moisturizer
If there's one thing I absolutely love about E.L.F.'s Tinted Moisturizer, it's this: It really, really moisturizes my skin. My skin is naturally dry, and this product did wonders for my flaky, dry skin. It actually look soft and supple for once--not too bad considering this tinted moisturizer costs $3.00 and lasts for months. It also gave my skin a bit of sheen, which helped liven up its appearance. Unfortunately, this moisturizer does move around a bit, and it's nearly impossible to wear with other cosmetics because it won't stay in place.
Don't get me wrong, though--I love E.L.F.'s Tinted Moisturizer. The porcelain color is surprisingly flattering on my half-Asian skin tone. It just doesn't want to stay in place, which can be a problem if you're using it to cover blemishes or skin discoloration.
