Fortunately, there are ways that you can still do so while decreasing your carbon footprint. For example, did you know that you could recycle regular old lint and toilet paper tubes into fire starters? Read How to Make a Fire Starter out of Dryer Lint for detailed instructions.
There are other steps you can take to green your fireplace or campfire, as well. In fact, there is a specially made fire log created specifically for this purpose.
If you were to pick up a box of Enviro-Logs, there is a good chance that you would think they were just like any other manufactured fire logs. Actually, though, they are the greenest fire logs available. They are made from recycled, food-grade corrugated containers. This fact has numerous benefits.
Because they are created from food-grade materials and they do not use a petroleum-based binder as other manufactured fire logs do, not only can you use these green fire logs in your fireplace or chiminea, but you can also use them in place of wood for outdoor or indoor cooking. Moreover, they are the only brand of manufactured fire logs that have been shown safe for use in campfires, chimineas, fireplaces and wood stoves.
There are other benefits to these green fire logs. 1.5 million wax corrugated cardboard containers are made every day in the United States alone. The boxes are coated with USDA approved food-grade wax because these containers are used to ship food items. Over 600,000 tons of these containers end up in landfills each year, where they can sit for over 50 years as the wax coating prevents them from decomposing. Since Enviro-Logs are made entirely from recycled wax corrugated cardboard containers, this alleviates the impact of the boxes in landfills.
Nevertheless, how well do they work? These green fire logs are so easy to light! You don't have to use a starter, although you can, and you don't have to worry about burning the package in order for the logs to catch ablaze. All you need to do is light them directly using a match or utility lighter.
They burn about as long as standard manufactured logs and much longer than a comparably sized bundle of firewood. The flames are large and yet not as smoky as firewood or other manufactured logs, and because they do not use petroleum, there is no sparking, dripping or melting involved.
Enviro-logs green fire logs radiate 50 percent more energy per pound than their non-green counterparts. They also emit 80 percent less carbon monoxide and 86 percent less creosote.
These green fire logs are reasonably priced, as well. You can pick them up at most home improvement and hardware stores, or purchase them online. Currently, a case of six three-pound green fire logs is $20.99; a case of four five-pound green fire logs is $21.99. There are no shipping charges, either!
The next time you want to cozy up beside a fire, think green and pick up an Enviro-Log. I highly recommend them!
