Review of the Farmville Facebook Application

Bruce Ziebarth
Facebook now boasts millions of users. Facebook offers users the chance to find and reconnect with friends and relatives. Unlike MySpace, Facebook is laid out towards actually reconnecting and networking with people. One popular area of Facebook are the Facebook applications. Facebook applications allow users to even play games with the Facebook friends. One popular game is Farmville.

Farmville allows Facebook users to build their own farm. Facebook users start out on Farmville with a farm that is eight blocks by eight blocks. Farmville allows Facebook users to start out by either planting crops, buying animals, or even adding declarations such as fences and leaf piles.

Farmville also offers decorations that are season specific. Around Halloween, Farmville offers decorations like a haunted house, a "spooky" tree, and tombstones. Around Thanksgiving, Farmville offers decorations such as leaf piles, red and yellow maple trees, hay stacks, and hay piles. These seasonal decorations allow Farmville players to give their Farmville farms a personal touch.

Planting and harvesting crops allows Facebook users to earn money on Farmville. Once you plant crops, you have to wait until they are ready for harvesting. Each type of crop requires a different amount of time before harvesting. For example, Strawberries take four hours to grow and Pumpkins take 8 hours. Once ready for harvesting, you will earn money from each type of crop.

As with any game, earning money in Farmville, allows you to advance in the game. Each harvested crop adds to your available Farmville money. As your Farmville money increases then you are able to purchase more expensive crops. More expensive crops require more money to buy the seeds and take longer to grow; however, more expensive crops bring in more Farmville money. For example, Pumpkins cost 30 coins to plant, take 8 hours to grow, and sell for 68 coins. While, Artichokes cost 70 coins, take 4 days to grow, and sell for 204 coins.

Farmville allows Facebook users to earn money and increase their farm. As you harvest crops and earn money then Farmville users can expand their farm. When you start in Farmville, your farm is four blocks by four blocks. This is a smaller Farmville farm. As you earn money then Farmville users can buy more land to expand their farm. Currently, the maximum farm size is 22 blocks by 22 blocks. Farmville makers have stated that farms will soon be able to expand to 24 blocks to 24 blocks.

Farmville also allows Facebook users to purchase farm equipment. It can take some time to plow each area, plant a crop in each one, then to harvest each crop. Once you have earned enough money in Farmville, you can purchase farm equipment. Purchasing a tractor, allows you to plow four plots of land at once, rather than just one. Purchasing a harvester, allows you to harvest four crop patches at a time. Purchasing a seeder, allows you to seed four crop patches at a time.

Farmville also allows Facebook users to assist their friends' farms. You can send Farmville requests to your Facebook friends. Each Facebook friend that accepts the request becomes a Farmville neighbor. Farmville allows you visit your neighbors' farms and run off pests (i.e. foxes, crows, etc.) and fertilizing their crops. As you assist your neighbors, you will earn experience points.

Facebook is a great way to reconnect with friends and relatives. Facebook applications are a great way to pass some time. Farmville allows you to buy crops, watch them grow, and to sell them. Selling crops allows you to earn money for farm equipment, decorations, animals, and even to buy a bigger farm. Whether you are a farmer, have a hobby farm, or always wanted to feel like a farmer, Farmville provides hours of enjoyment.
