Review of Febreze Scentstories Player (Air Freshner)

The Best Alternative to Burning Candles and Achieving a Pleasant Smell in Your Home

Lisa Davis
I have tried it all in my home. Candles, aerosol air freshners, and even those plug-ins that never really smell from day one and take up one of my electrical outlets. So how do you get your home smelling great when company comes over and keep that smell noticeable until after they leave? The only safe answer I have found so far is the Febreze Scentstories Player.

The Scentstories Player looks and works much like a compact disc player. It plugs into the wall and plays scent discs. The scent discs feature five scents each that follow a different theme. For instance, the disc that comes with the player is entitled "Exploring A Mountain Trail". The five scents on the disc are: "Following The Winding Creek," "Walking Beside Wildflowers," 'Exploring the Mountains," "High in the Mountain Pass," and "Gazing at the Tall Firs." As you can see, these scents are themed around nature in the mountains. While it is a pleasant disc, it is certainly not my favorite. The Christmas holiday limited edition disc is my favorite (although hard to obtain off-season) but the "On a Tropical Island" disc comes in at a close second. Currently, Febreze makes 6 scent discs that are available all-year round and releases the holiday disc around Thanksgiving.

As I mentioned before, the discs are very similar to a compact disc. You insert them in the player and press play. The machine starts to emit the first scent for a half-hour before moving on to scent number two. The rotation continues until all five scents have been played (which takes two and a half hours). After the rotation is complete, the machine shuts itself off. Particular scents can also be skipped if desired. Each disc lasts for 50 hours (20 plays) and costs about $5 at Wal-Mart, which makes them a better value than a pricey gourmet candle that may burn for 20 hours if you are lucky.

Another good advantage to the player is safety. Unlike candles, there is no flame that you have to worry about burning children or catching the curtains on fire. Nor does the machine emit carbon dioxide into the air like candles do. While the machine is a small initial investment of around $30 for the player, Febreze actively promotes this newer product and puts coupons in ad flyers and on their website continuously. However, if you are unsatisfied with you Scentstories Player, Febreze offers a full refund including shipping and handling costs if you return the machine within the first year of purchase.
