Although this is primarily a fast-food eatery that sells hot dogs and hamburger's, they also do a brisk catering business selling their ever popular broasted chicken. Whenever there's a big order it's always for the broasted chicken at Firehouse Hot Dogs in Midlothian, Illinois.

It's what brings them in and coming back for more!

People come from all around to pick-up their mouth-watering, always tender and crispy broasted chicken that's perfect for holiday gatherings, graduation party's, birthdays, picnics, you name it. Any time's a good time really to order their chicken. It's sold by the piece and you can order anywhere from 4 on up to 100 pieces depending on how many people you're feeding. The owner will guide you if you have any questions.

When I go there I always order the 2 piece chicken dinner, approx. $5 and some change, which comes with a side order of cole slaw, a dinner roll (which I decline) and my favorite potato wedges. I order these over the french fries because they're fresh not frozen. Also, since I like my chicken fresh I always order it at the counter and wait, not only do I get it piping hot, but I get to talk to the always affable Stefan, his wife, his helper Nikki and occasionally his son Bill.

Just recently Bill came back from Athens and we had a fun time reveling in his tales of partying the night away while on vacation. He came back refreshed with a renewed sense of energy that I had never seen in him before! Maybe I should go to Athens, I sure could use a vacation. I can't tell you the fun I have going there talking to Stefan and company. Ahhh the simple pleasures of conversation, it reminds me of my childhood.

Not only do I get a great meal but I get to connect with people I really like, which is a rarity nowadays. I especially like the banter back and forth. Stefan is definitely old school, a first generation Greek that is a tireless worker and is always on hand to make sure things run smoothly and provide lively commentary on everything from the state of the economy, to not having enough parking spaces to accommodate all his customer's. Oh, the woes of a small business owner !

On a side note, I recently discovered his version of a rainbow cone, a South Side of Chicago favorite, which was
originally concocted at Rainbow Cone an ice cream shop about 2 miles north of there. The only difference being they serve their ice cream on a cone, Firehouse doesn't.

For about $2.50 and some change you get an enormous home-made ice cream sandwich made out of chocolate, strawberry, orange sherbert, Palmer and pistachio. Ten times better than Rainbow Cone's because it's fresh and thick and it's all made on the premises daily by Stefan, who even stays late at night, sometimes until 11:00 PM, to make them.

Recently he told me one of his customer's had seen at night making ice cream and called him on his cell phone and ordered a carry-out. Stefan naturally obliged, took the order and brought it out to the customer's car. Now that's service! He said if he's there and somebody calls he doesn't have a problem taking another order, he appreciates their business, even if it's after closing time. Who does that? I don't know anybody, at least in the Chicagoland area.

While it's definitely busier in Summer, I prefer to go there in the Fall and Winter. Just a personal preference, I just think food tastes better in the colder months because it's easier to work up an appetite.

But really anytime is a good time going to Firehouse Hot Dogs in Midlothian, Illinois.
