Review: Flatout Healthy Grain Flatbread with Multi-Grain and Flax is Tasty and High in Fiber

Is Flatout Flatbread Really Healthier Than Regular Sliced Bread?

Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez
I tried a tasty way to get high-dietary fiber bread into my diet without having to choke down sandpaper-scratchy, flavor-like-hay bread to do it. I found Flatout Healthy Grain Multi-Grain with Flax Flatbread. This is one of the tastiest bread products I have seen on the shelf, and it has even gotten me to try some new flavor combinations for my sandwiches, including:

Salad wraps
Shrimp wraps
Chicken wraps

These are all things I have never tried on regular sliced bread before but was encouraged to try after buying this bag of Flatout Healthy Grain Multi-Grain with Flax Flatbread slices.

How Does Flatout Multi-Grain with Flax Flatbread Compare to Nature's Own Honey Wheat Sliced Bread?

Comparing two slices of Nature's Own Honey Wheat bread to the one slice of Flatout Multi-Grain with Flax flatbread, we find this:

Nature's Own Calories: 140
Flatout Flatbread: 100

Nature's Own Carbohydrates: 28 grams
Flatout Flatbread: 17 grams

Nature's Own Dietary Fiber: Less than 2 grams
Flatout Flatbread: 8 grams

Nature's Own Protein: 4 grams
Flatout Flatbread: 9 grams

Nature's Own Sugar: 4 grams
Flatout Flatbread: 1 gram

Clearly, Flatout Flatbread has some major advantages over Nature's Own sliced bread in a few areas, especially in dietary fiber. Folks, Flatout flatbread offers a whopping 31% of your daily recommended dietary fiber! Many of us would be lucky to get that much dietary fiber in during an entire day!

However, here's the not-so-hot news. When compared to two slices of Nature's Own Honey Wheat sliced bread, Flatout Healthy Grain Multi-Grain with Flax Flatbread does have a few areas where it falls short:

Nature's Own Calories from Fat: 10
Flatout Flatbread: 25

Nature's Own Total Fat: 1 gram
Flatout Flatbread: 2.5 grams

Nature's Own Sodium: 240 grams
Flatout Flatbread: 280 grams

Nature's Own Iron: 12% daily recommended intake
Flatout Flatbread: 8%

Nature's Own Sugar Alcohol: None listed
Flatout Flatbread: 1 gram

In terms of saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol, both Nature's Own and Flatout Flatbread rank the same: there is none of each in either bread product.

Flavor wise, Flatout Healthy Grain Multi-Grain with Flax Flatbread wins. The taste is a little richer, and the style of the bread (flatbread versus sliced bread) allows me to make sandwich wraps.

While some might think comparing sliced bread to flatbread is like comparing apples to oranges, those people are actually both right and wrong. Yes, flatbread and sliced bread are two different animals in a few respects, yet they can have an equal place at the lunch table because they both offer you sandwich-making opportunities.

The question really comes down to figuring out what your style is. The Flatout Flatbread is nice because the handy wrapping ability allows me to make a few different types of sandwiches I'd probably never try on sliced bread. Besides, the Flatout Healthy Grain flatbread with multi-grains and flax is far healthier in many areas than most any regular sliced bread I'll be able to find at the supermarket.

Flatout Healthy Grain Flatbread with multi-grain and flax is sold in 11.2-ounce packs of six flatbread slices and can be found in your grocer's bread or deli section; this pack cost $2.99 at Sweetbay Supermarkets in Central Florida during December 2009.
