Review of Folgers Flavors Hazelnut Ground Coffee

Brad Kamer
When it comes to brewing coffee at home, my usual "go to" brew is the large bag of Dunkin Donuts medium roast ground coffee. I pick this up at Costco and it last us at least a month if not about six weeks. Well, I had the unfortunate displeasure of running out of this home staple and did not feel the urge to trek all the way to Costco. I ran to the local Meijer for another coffee that might tie us over until the next Costco run. After walking up and down the coffee aisle perusing the different blends and flavors, I settled on the Folgers Hazelnut ground coffee that was on sale. It has been quite some time since brewing some flavored coffee so this seemed like a good idea.

The Brew

The recipe calls for about a tablespoon of coffee per six ounce cup. I went shy of that ratio and the coffee still provided a decent dark brown when brewing was complete. The kitchen and the entire house quickly absorbed that nutty aroma from the hazelnut additive. The hazelnut flavoring is artificial and natural, but the kitchen was a pleasure to walk into.

The Taste

I gave up drinking Folgers and Maxwell House brands long ago after being hooked on Dunkin Donuts brand coffee. The first sip of this coffee was better than I had anticipated. The brew had a rich finish with a nutty fresh flavor. I usually add half and half and a pinch of sugar to coffee, though I think this brew could hold its own without any additions. As I used less than the instructed amount of coffee when brewing, the coffee is definitely a tad tastier when adhering to the ratio of one tablespoon to six ounce cup.

The Price

The price and size of the container were the key factors to lead me into purchasing Folgers Hazelnut Ground Coffee. The 11.5 ounce red container was on sale for only $3.79. This purchase was a great buy considering how many tasty cups of coffee are yielded from the small can of Folgers. The sale price also included a Cinnamon Swirl and French Vanilla varieties. Though these containers were on sale, I would imagine they would go no higher than $4.50 at regular price.

Overall Opinion

This flavored ground coffee is a keeper. I still like my Dunkin Donuts coffee as my number one morning choice of brew. The Folgers flavored coffees still will be considered as an extra to carry in the pantry for those days I am in the mood for a good flavored cup of Joe.
