A few days ago, my wife went to the store to pick up some breakfast cereal. We were on a bit of a tight shopping budget at the time and, as a result of that, she avoided the more expensive (and better known) cereals and, instead, looked for some cheaper brands. As a result of this, one of the cereals she ended up buying for our kids was Food Club Hokus Pokus Cereal.
This was not the first time I have seen this cereal. In fact, I've passed it a few times while at the store but have never taken the time to buy it. This is because, while cheaper, I always figured it was a rip off of Lucky Charms and, like many other bargain brands, wouldn't be as good as the real thing.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
As I mentioned before, this cereal is very affordable; roughly $2 less than Lucky Charms would have cost us at that particular store. But, even though we were able to save quite a bit of money on it, we didn't end up sacrificing quality. In fact, I think I (and, more importantly, our kids) like this more than the better known cereal.
One of my biggest problems with other bargain cereals is they are rarely fresh. I haven't found one that was stale. But, I have found some that were pretty close. That wasn't a problem with this cereal. It was very fresh.
Another issue I have with some cheaper breakfast cereals is they seem to be very hard. Yes, they soften up with milk. But, my youngest daughter will sometimes eat cereal as a snack and, without the milk; many bargain brands simply aren't edible for her. Once again, this was not a problem with this cereal. The pieces were very easy for her to chew without having to soak them in milk first.
And, as far as taste goes, I have no complaints. There is just enough sugar on this cereal to give it a sweet flavor (like my kids love) without being too sweet. This is something I can tell my daughters enjoy.
What really impressed me about this product though was the quantity of marshmallows inside it. Because it was a cheaper brand, I figured it would skimp on that part. But, I have to say there are as many marshmallows as we would have found in Lucky Charms and possibly more.
If you are looking for breakfast cereal for your kids (or yourself) and have a choice between this one and Lucky Charms, I recommend saving money on this brand.
