Review: Food Pride 90 Percent Lean Ground Hamburger

Steve Helmer

My wife and I were trying to decide what to have for dinner the other night and, after some discussion, decided we were both in the mood for homemade meatloaf; mostly because it is something we haven't had in a long time.

Of course, this did require a trip to the store since we didn't have any hamburger in our freezer and I ultimately ended up picking up a pound of Food Pride 90 Percent Lean Ground Hamburger.

This was not the first time I have purchased this particular product. In fact, I go out of my way to buy this hamburger despite the fact I can pick up another brand at a closer grocery store for a little bit less money. And, there are a number of reasons for this.

The big one is the fact there isn't a whole lot of fat in this burger. This is something that might seem obvious given the 90 percent lean label on the package. But, I have had plenty of other ground hamburgers that made the same claim only to be full of fat and, after frying it up, I would end up having to drain off just as much grease as I would from a regular pack. With this particular brand of hamburger, however, there really isn't much fat in it at all and I rarely even have to drain the meat when I'm done cooking it.

Another thing I like about this particular hamburger is the taste. In theory, there really shouldn't be much difference in flavor considering the meat comes from the same animal. But, this meat definitely has a better flavor to it. Part of it might be my opinion that the meat seems to be fresher than other hamburger I get. But, I also think the lack of fat in it does improve the overall taste (I think fatty meats seem to have less flavor).

In fact, I'm positive that the reason we liked the meatloaf we made so much was us using this meat in it.

If you are looking for ground hamburger, this is the one I would recommend looking for. It might be a bit more expensive than other hamburger brands and you might have to go out of your way to buy it. But, it is one of the few products I feel is worth the extra money and effort. As I said before, I buy this almost every time I need ground hamburger.
