Review: Francesco Rinaldi Tomato, Garlic and Onion Pasta Sauce

Steve Helmer

A few days ago, my wife and I were out shopping and, since it was getting a bit late, I decided to make spaghetti for dinner (because it was something I could make without any real effort). I already had most of the ingredients I needed, including sauce, but my wife didn't realize this and, when I wasn't paying attention, she picked up a jar of Francesco Rinaldi Tomato, Garlic and Onion Sauce.

Since I already had my ingredients and didn't need this sauce right away, we ended up keeping it in our pantry for something else and, a couple days ago, when we decided to make meatball subs, we finally got around to giving it a try.

I have had other pasta sauce from this brand in the past and, for the most part, have had no complaints about it. It's an affordable brand that usually has a decent flavor to it and, unlike so many other jarred sauces out there (other than the very expensive ones); I have been able to use it without having to add anything extra on my end in terms of spices.

When my wife picked this one out, I had hoped that would be the case as well. And, for the most part, I was right about this. Since we were using it with meatballs, I didn't even bother adding anything like garlic or other spices to it and, instead, just added the meatballs and heated it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. And, unlike so many other sauces out there, we were able to eat this and it had plenty of flavor; it wasn't anything that was overly bland without us doctoring it up.

My only real complaint about this particular variety of sauce is there is a bit too much onion in it. My wife was the first to notice this and made a pretty funny face when she first tasted it and, when I tried it, I had to agree with her on that. However, I will also say this is a flavor you do get used to after a few bites so it isn't that huge of a deal.

Overall, since we didn't spend that much money on this product, I do feel it was worth buying. If you are looking for a sauce that isn't as expensive as the top brands but offers some flavor, I recommend it; as long as you like onions.
