Review of Fred: The Movie

Jose Zuniga
The industry makes a grave error, a first for the cable network Nicklelodeon, which takes a fifteen-year-old net weird-o to superstardom in a movie titled after his pseudo internet persona Fred: The Movie. Aimed at teens and perhaps younger audiences, this movie has no real appeal for anyone. The movie has a number of faults including: really bad acting by Lucas Cruiskshank (i.e. Fred Figglehorn), an almost egoistic amount of time spent on putting Fred in front of a camera while he shouts nonsense at it as though he were scripting it himself (and Fred sucks at improvising), not enough camera time for his cast, and really un-funny and weird situations. It resembles a Cheech-and-Chong movie but only if you remove all the funny bits and add an annoying screech every three seconds (i.e. Fred's voice). Fred makes a crank call to the police in the movie, hardly a unique joke but then he does it again, thus encouraging his dumb behavior. His little flashes of imagination could have been funny, if they did anything to add to the plot but they don't. In the tradition of a cartoon, they make no sense with an aim to be comical but, once again, Fred isn't, especially when he tries to sing popular musical tunes in his deep voice. Confused Fred thinks his would-be girlfriend, that she would be if she cared for him at all, is being mistreated by her parents and sets out on a journey to find her after she moves out of Fred's neighborhood. In his journey, he insults an entire community by calling a Latin person "a spaceman" but, apparently, this is okay because its a funny joke, except, because this movie hasn't failed to keep on going down hill, it really isn't.

This movie can't survive in the minds of the young for more than a few seconds. No matter how low you put the volume, the acting is still so horrid that it makes no difference. Trying to put funny in this movie is like scratching at the wind.

The movie has a lot of moments where the exclamation "Really?" spurts out or is necessary. Nicklelodeon is widely known for making quality entertainment for teens but this is just too little comedy for one person to handle. Fred puke's on his girlfriend for some unknown reason. Is the audience to believe that girl scout cookies are so disgusting, they make a person puke? Twice? Most of the problem is a failure to connect with its audience in a realistic way. Fred's character is constantly in the clouds with his off-the-wall visions.

Audiences expected a cake of comedy and they didn't even get the bread crumbs. Besides which, Fred's lack of fashion is sure to entice teens. Then, to top it off, Fred refers to his affiliation with "You-Tube" in the movie. Hmmm, nearly eighty-five percent screen-time, and a reference to the website that made him popular, self-promote much? However, it would be to my displeasure, if upon coming to this conclusion myself, it would hinder anyone from watching a piece of Nicklelodeon artistry, hence I recommend the movie, even if it blows.

I agree this movie was an epic failure, his voice wasn't as high as it was in the youtube videos which made it less funny when he spazticly blurted out random thoughts, in the videos he also made it fun to watch, unlike the movie. One thing you got wrong is that he puked on his so called "girlfriend" because he ate sardines. Overall this movie failed. Such horrible takes of discrimanation and stupidity.
