Review of Freschetta Brick Oven Singles 5-Cheese Pizza

Eliza Wynn
I was in the freezer section of my usual supermarket, looking at microwavable pizzas. I'd recently tried one that wasn't bad, but I wanted to see what other choices were available. I saw Freschetta Brick Oven Singles and decided to take a closer look. Seeing that it was available in 5-Cheese variety, I thought it looked promising. According to the front of the box, the five cheeses are mozzarella, fontina, provolone, asiago, and parmesan. That sounded good to me! I decided to buy two, at $3.00 each.

According to Freschetta's website, they use spring wheat for the crust, which they knead and roll to make it rise like bread. They also use all-natural cheese and fresh-picked, flash-frozen vegetables.

Freschetta Brick Oven Singles 5-Cheese Pizza: Preparation

The first thing to do is get a plate. It doesn't need to be safe for the microwave, because you're not cooking the pizza on the plate. However, you'll need to have it handy very soon.

Remove the Freschetta Brick Oven Pizza Singles box from the freezer. Don't tear the box open. I almost did this, and it would have been a big mistake, because you need the box. Find the tear-off strip, pull it off, and carefully open the box along the perforations. Take the pizza out of the box, remove the plastic, and set the pizza down on the plate; don't try to hold the pizza while performing the next step.

Fold the box flap back, bending it around the edge so that the silver part is flat. This is the crisping platform, and it's just barely large enough for the pizza. Set the pizza on the platform and then put the whole thing in the microwave. Cook on high for 2 minutes and 15 seconds; the cheese should be melted at this point. Afterward, wait 3 minutes before removing the pizza from the microwave. This is important because the pizza and the silver part will be hot. Note that the cooking time is for an 1100-watt microwave.

According to the directions, you can also place the pizza directly on the rack of an oven preheated to 400 degrees and cook 13 to 15 minutes. I didn't try this and don't see a reason to do so, since the result from the microwave was outstanding. I can't guarantee the same results for anyone else, but my experience was very good, and I've made several of these pizzas so far.

Freschetta Brick Oven Singles 5-Cheese Pizza: Results

The first thing I noticed was that this pizza has a much better aroma than the others I've tried. That was promising, but the taste would be the real test. I took a bite, and I wasn't disappointed.

The crust was thick, and the bottom crisped nicely while the rest stayed soft; the crisping platform performed well. The cheese blend was flavorful, and unlike some frozen pizzas, it stood up well to the tomato sauce, which was pleasant and not overpowering. This pizza wasn't soggy or greasy, but it wasn't too dry either.

This was by far the best microwave pizza I've ever had. I asked my husband what he thought, and he agreed. Freschetta Brick Oven Singles 5-Cheese Pizza is a winner!

nice write up and good review...tho' my honey is so picky about food, he'd never eat a microwave pizza, that's almost sacrilege(sp?) to him, but well done here!
