Review: Friday the 13th Killer Cut

Is Enough Enough or was This a Refreshing Re-make?

I'm sure everyone is aquainted with the Friday the 13th movies. Well, my husband and I recently got around to watching the 2009 DVD. It starts with a group of teenagers who go camping to Crystal Lake. One of the guys shares the story of a haunting there. While the others are skeptical of the story, they all ultimately get brutally killed by Jason Voorhees. Then the movie jumps ahead in time to show Clay who is in the area searching for his sister Whitney, who was part of the group from the beginning of the movie. This is where he first meets Trent and his group of friends that are heading up to Trent's family house at Crystal Lake. Jenna, one of Trent's friends, is tired of Trent's bad attitude and later goes off with Clay in his search. They have run ins with Jason, but they find Whitney, and return to the cottage to warn the others about the horror. Unfortunately they cannot escape Jason Voorhees.

The major problem I have with Friday the 13th is that it feels so overplayed. Enough is enough. Since 1980 there have been numerous re-makes and sequels. Jason has been killed and resurrected so many times already that it sort of ruins this movie's plot; it's predictable, like I already know what's going to happen throughout the movie.

I don't hate the movie, but I don't love it either. It's just "okay" to me. Some things were too unreal, like timing. In one part of the movie it took Clay and Jenna from light until dark to get where they were going. On the way back, they went the same route and arrived back at the cottage too quickly. If it took them as long on the return, then several hours would have passed, but the movie didn't really pass that much time.

Furthermore, if Jason can jump and appear anywhere, why does it take him so long to get to the victims to kill them?

Another timing issue is with seasons. The movie says its in June. However, towards the end of the movie, take a look at the trees. It looks more like Fall.

In the scene where Bree is thrown onto the cop's windshield the glass shattered. In reality, car glass crumbles because of the safety construction.

When one of the guys finds the marijuana plants growing in the woods, he goes over and smells the leaf. Any pot enthusiast would know the smokeable part is what smells, not the leaves.

As cars are shown in the movie, you can gather that they are in New Jersey. New Jersey requires helmets be worn on motorcycles. Clay was not wearing a helmet on his bike.

Speaking of New Jersey, the last time I checked only a gas station owner or employee could pump gas there. In the movie, you see otherwise.

While the above goofs stand out to me, I can't overlook the positive sides of the movie. It remained suspenseful and the killings were bloody and brutal. I would not want less in a movie such as this.

In closing, Friday the 13th Killer Cut is an okay movie to watch. It's not overly scarey or silly, but the action part is too predictable. I'd watch it again.
