Review of the Garmin Approach G5 - GPS Enabled Golf Handheld

Know Exactly Where to Swing for Your Hole-in-One

J G Hodnette
In our current age of Garmin and comparably affordable GPS systems, it seems like everyone always knows exactly where they are at all times. And isn't that a comforting thought? Garmin thinks so, so they have invented a new GPS system specifically for use with golfers. But is this new GPS system worth the price? Find out whether this should be a gift that you should consider for yourself or any other golfers in your life.

GPS for Golf?

With the Approach G5, Garmin gives golfers the ability to know more than ever exactly how their game is going. If you're tired of guessing how far your drives are really going, then this is the product for you. This GPS system will measure your shot distance with each swing with its highly sensitive satellites. This product comes preloaded with many great US golf courses, but you can also search for more on Garmin.com and load them straight onto your system for no charge. Not only that, but there is also no annual fee for this Garmin like there is for other models.

The Approach G5

The machine itself is impressive and well designed. Garmin knew that with water hazards, driving around in golf carts, and who knows what else, this little device was likely to be dropped, stepped on, and dunked in some water at some point during its career. As a result, it's completely waterproof, rugged, and has a three inch touch display. This display has the advantage of being designed so that it minimizes glare. Since it is designed to be used outdoors during the brightest parts of the day, this is an absolute requirement and an excellent decision by Garmin. It also runs off of two AA batteries, which is very nice and convenient since other devices use more expensive and harder to find batteries. You'll run through batteries after a while, but you always have the option to use rechargable ones.

Conclusion

If you're a golf enthusiast and would love a new gadget to use to impress your golfing buddies, then this is a great product for you. The lack of a yearly fee and the clever design make it a great product. Its only real downfall is that it is so niche that you may find yourself feeling like it isn't quite worth the $300.00-$400.00 that you'll pay for it. This device also has a nifty score-keeping feature that is very well done. Still, for what it is, this is a great product.
