Review of Glenlaurel Inn of Hocking Hills, OH

A Quaint Scottish Themed Bed and Breakfast in the Heart of Ohio

M M Corwin
When I want to go somewhere to recharge, the first place I think of is Glenlaurel Inn in the Hocking Hills region of central Ohio. Its only about an hour drive from Columbus, but this Scottish themed inn sure feels a world away.

As soon as you enter your suite for the night, you will be greeted by the soothing sounds of Celtic music. The music reinforces the Scottish theme of the inn, which is decorated with plaids and warm colors. Your room will have some snacks on hand for after a hike around the trails on the property. Also, there
are plenty of local guides and other reading material for you to enjoy as you sit in your cozy over stuffed chair.

Each evening in the Manor, you can greet the owner and other guests at "Happy Half Hour." At that time, you can enjoy some light appetizers and a drink. But do note: If you want an alcoholic beverage while socializing or with your dinner, bring your own. The inn does not have a liquor license, but will allow you to drink the libations you bring with you.

The most special part of your visit will undoubtedly be dinner. It is not included in the price of your stay, but you will not find a more delicious, romantic meal anywhere else in the region. You came here to be pampered, anyway, so put down that credit card for a surely memorable meal.

One Saturday evenings the dinner is seven courses; other nights it consists of five courses. The menus vary seasonally, and it is a set menu. Be sure to mention to the receptionist when you make your reservations if you have any dietary restrictions. Main courses are along the lines of rack of lamb or beef wellington. Enjoy the excellent fare in a candle lit romantic setting. A unique tradition at Glenlaurel is a poetry reading by the host of the evening prior to dinner.

After dinner, you will be in the mood to relax in your accommodations with your someone special.

The inn has a few different kinds of accommodations - rooms, cottages, and crofts. All three are pricey, so my advice is to spring a few extra dollars to stay in a cottage or croft. While the rooms also have luxurious bedding and a romantic atmosphere, the cottages and crofts give that sense that you are in your own
world - and you are. The cottages and crofts often have gas fireplaces and private hot tubs for extreme relaxation no matter what time of year it is.

After you have enjoyed a good night's sleep in your room, be sure to once again indulge in a great meal. Breakfast is included with your stay, and it would be a shame not to take part. The homemade scones along with a few choices of entrees (usually an egg dish and a pancake/waffle type dish) will give you
enough energy to enjoy the sights of the Hocking Hills region. That is, if you can make yourself leave the beautiful property of Glenlaurel.
