Review of Green Giant's Simply Steam Garden Vegetable Medley

It Steams it in the Bag!

Green Giant is the all too famous vegetable company we are grew up watching the commercials for on TV with the big green giant singing "ho, ho, ho, Green Giant!" The company has been around since 1903 and started out in Minnesota. He's the friendly guy that tried to get us all excited about eating vegetables. We all know that we are supposed to meet our quota of vegetables each and every day. Sometimes, it can get time consuming finding the vegetables you like, preparing them, and matching them with a perfect meal. Green Giant has taken the guess work out of this task with perfect sized, sides of vegetables to go along with any meal. They are available in your grocer's freezer section and usually go for less than $1.30 a box. I often can find them for $1.00 when they are on sale.

The most recent flavor I tried was Simply Steam, Seasoned, Garden Vegetable Medley. It contains sugar snap peas, roasted potatoes, red peppers, and a garden herb sauce. It cooks in 4 - 4 ½ minutes in your microwave. The vegetables in this selection are supposed to be perfectly steamed to perfection with the special bag they are contained in. When I first dumped the bag out onto a serving dish, there was an overwhelming amount of sugar snap peas. Some of them seemed a bit stringy and the ends of them were too tough to eat. I found that the red peppers seemed a bit mushy. There was not a huge amount of roasted potatoes in the bag, which more would have been nice. The garden herb sauce was nice, but overall, lacked a lot of flavor.

The nutritional value of this side dish is relatively healthy. Each box contains about 2 servings, which is about a half cup of veggies. Each serving is 50 calories, .5 grams of fat and 11 grams of fat. The Garden Vegetable Medley contains 20% of your daily value of Vitamin C, 4% of Iron, 2% of Calcium, and 8% Vitamin A.

On the whole, I would probably not buy this particular variety of steamed vegetables from Green Giant again. Although it sounded like it would be good, the vegetables were more of a disappointment than anything. The sauce was a nice addition, but could have been stronger or more flavorful. I think red peppers just do not turn out well being frozen and steamed again, unless you enjoy them being slightly mushy. The potatoes were the best feature in this side, unfortunately they were very sparse.

I just tried this for the first time today. As cooked vegies go, this was not bad. The peas were still crisp and the potatoes were done well. Peppers are going to be mushy when you cook them no matter how. Steaming is best if you want them to retain some crispness, but over all the texture and taste was good. Unfortunately as a Diabetic I found the sodium content quite high. I would love some low sodium versions of these products.

I've just now (for lunch today) tried the Garden Vegetable Medley and actually enjoyed it more than I expected to. I brought one package of it to work for my lunch and it was very tasty. The snap peas were nicely crisp (and not tough as suggested above), and there were enough potatoes for me. I'd say the potato content was equivalent to 1 small potato, which is all you should have as a serving size anyway. The sauce was not too overbearing but still had enough taste that it added to the dish. I definitely will buy more of this!

is no reason not to have them in the house!)

I totally disagree. I have not tried the flavor in question because I don't want the carbs from the potatoes. I have, however, tried the "Weight Control" blend (snap peas, black beans, edamame, and carrots), the "Immunity" Blend (broccoli, carrots, green beans, and bell pepper), and the "Vision" blend (carrots, zuchinni, inter alia). I LOVE these.

When I get home from work, I am immediately hungry. I pop one of these in the microwave, and 4 minutes later am enjoying a healthy, fresh-tasting, steamed veggie snack instead of reaching for the Cheez-Its. The sauces are very light--which is what makes them delicous. A light butter or light rosemary olive oil is all that fresh vegetables need. I was also pleased to find that they were not over-salted.

This is a delicious, super simple way to eat more vegetables. I would compare it to popcorn in convenience. With these in the house, not only will I eat more vegetables, but I will eat less junk. (And at that price point, there

I hate when something sounds so good and turns out disappointing. Of course, now I want some and it would be just like me to try them anyway and then say, gee, I should have listened. I often freeze peppers; but I never pre-cooked or steamed them before freezing.

Nice article. Personally I prefer to steam my veggies in the microwave in a glass container. I heard that plastics can release toxins into food when heated, so it's best not to use them for cooking if you can avoid it.

Thanks for the honesty. I don't care for steamed veggies anyway. Prefer mine cooked!
