Traveling south on I35, take time to pull off and stretch your legs at the Golden Triangle Mall in Denton. Gyros City is located at the center rotunda-type section. The large bright sign is easily visible.

History

The manger's lovely daughter told me Gyros City is a family-owned and operated business. The manager, Salma Assani, uprooted her family and the business, moving both from Oklahoma City to Denton in October, 2009. Gyros City had been operating in Oklahoma City since 2005 although the family had lived there for a number of years.

Menu Options

There is a selection of gyro sandwiches wrapped in wonderfully warm pita bread. These include the original (with tender, succulent lamb), grilled chicken, fish, vegetable or falafel (a chickpea vegetarian patty). Prices go up to $4.39 for the sandwich only, but get the combo which includes fries and a drink for $6.89. Tea or a cold drink is a reasonable $1.19 for the small.

Gyros City does use a family-secret recipe to make their own excellent sandwich sauce and my guess is it's yogurt-based.

Platters are also available with gyro, grilled chicken, fish, or falafel. These include two pitas, fries and that heavenly Greek Salad with black olives and feta cheese. As Rachel Ray would say, "Yum-O"! Price is a bargain at $7.79.

You may also choose a Gyro Greek Salad or have it with grilled chicken. The medium grilled chicken is $4.49 and the large is $5.49. For me, the medium is plenty.

Directions

Travel south on I35 about 35-40 miles from the Texas-Oklahoma border and you will be in Denton. Take the Loop 288 exit, go left and Golden Triangle Mall will be on your left. This exit does frequently back up as many people are turning left and it is only a four-lane road under the underpass, but widens to six lanes just after that (I know, not very good planning, but us locals remember the years of construction to have those four lanes under the overpass!).

Another suggested stop in the town of Sanger about 12 miles north of Denton is the Gypsy Cowgirl, a very unique gift shop or Old West Café with home-cooked meals.
