Review of Hog Island Oyster Company in San Francisco

Kirsten Barker
On a recent trip to San Francisco a friend recommended we go to the Ferry building and try this place out. Hog Island Oyster Company. This place is great! Right by the bay with outside seating and an inside oyster bar area where you can sit and enjoy your raw oysters and watch them do all the shucking While enjoying some of the locally brewed beer or fine artisian wine.

We had a few choices of oyster platters to pick from and we always chose the oyster bar selection. It is a selection of a few of each kind of oysters offered. You can chose from 8, 12, or 24. If you love oysters I would have to recommend the 24. They are delivered to your table on a platter of Ice with this wonderful sauce I believe they call it Hog Wash. WOW!

I will never be able to eat another oyster without this great sauce made up of some vinegars, shallots, jalepeno peppers and cilantro. Raw on the halfshell with this magic stuff is great. We also had the chance to have some of the Oyster gratin which for seafood lovers who like their oysters cooked a bit is a great pick.

Even if your not a huge fresh Oyster lover you can still enjoy some of the other menu items like the Cowgirl Creamery Grilled Cheese Sandwich. One of the most sophisticated grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had with Fromage Blanc, Mezzo Secco and Cave Aged Gruyere served with pickled vegetables. The salads are always a great pick as well. The food here is all so fresh and light.

You can also visit the farm where the oysters are from and enjoy some bayside picnic dining. We were unable do this but will definitely try that out next time we visit the bay area. The Hog Island Oyster Company also has a website you can visit to learn more about them and get some directions to either the Bar in the Ferry building or to thier farm.

On certain days and times at the restaurant they have happy hour oysters which we got in on once and you pay a dollar per oyster from their pick of the day. Nothing better than the sublime view, a beer and some raw oysters.
