Review: Home Depot Kids Activity Workshop

Taru Mehta
If you have small kids between the ages of 3 and 12 staying with you in your household, you must book an appointment with The Home Depot from 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. Home Depot arranges the special activity workshop for the kids during this time. I had an opportunity recently to visit such activity workshop with my grandson and I found it very interesting and helping in the overall development of the kids. Each time a separate theme is selected and some small item is fixed as an assignment to create from the row material and tools supplied by the Home Depot management. The theme was the next Olympic games when I visited with my grandson last week on August 2. The kids were given the assignment to create the flag post with the flag having Olympic symbol on it. Though, it took only around half an hour to complete the assignment, it gave a tremendous positive boost of creating something to all the kids who participated in the workshop.

We reached the Home Depot at around 10 am and were amazed to see around 150 children sitting on the chairs, working with their hands, under the guidance of their parents. As soon as you register the name of your kid, they will hand over the set of complete row materials needed along with the instructions sheet on how to make the specimen. The name of the kid is noted at the time of entry. All the tools like hammer, nails, and the glue required to make the flag post were available on each table. Our grandson started making the flag post by following the instructions written on the sheet supplied. Even many small kids around 3 to 4 years of age were also actively trying to create the specimen with the sparkle and energy in their eyes. As soon as the specimen is made ready, we have to move out showing the specimen made by the kid to the staff member. The staff member would then present the certificate of achievement to each kid with his or her name written on it. They can carry the specimen with them to their homes to preserve as a memory of this wonderful workshop.

One small clip is also presented to each kid on completion of each workshop. Our grandson has collected around 6 such clips as a token of appreciation in taking part in six such workshops. Each kid is also given the pink color apron that is to be worn at the time of taking part in such workshops. The theme of the next workshop that is going to be held after around one month is also given at the time of attending previous workshop. For example, the theme for the next workshop, which is going to be held on first Saturday of September in all the Home Depot stores, is fixed as making the goal post of football, again due to the Olympic games being held at China. We have already made up our mind to attend it without fail next month.

Such small social contributions of the stores also result in to lot of awakening among the people, particularly among the children. It is surely a wonderful social service performed by the stores management. All other establishments must commence more and more such social works also so that more and more people can get benefits out of them. I strongly recommend all my AC readers to visit Home Depot stores with their young ones to participate in such creative workshops that help tremendously in overall development of the kids.
