Review of Hop Kee Cantonese Restaurant in New York City

Hop Kee is a great little Cantonese restaurant in New York City. I warn you not to pre judge this restaurant because of the way it looks on the outside or even the inside for that matter. Overall the whole look of the restaurant really needs to be updated. When you walk in you might frowning, but wait until they deliver the food it really will not even matter how the restaurant looks.

The dishes are great. Many people who have never had Cantonese food before might expect it to be just like Chinese food. What they will come to find out is the Cantonese foods have some different options from Chinese food! In fact many of the Cantonese dishes that you can choose from here are a little more gourmet from Chinese food.

The service is great, maybe even a little too great. The waiter is ready to take your order before you are ready to decide what you want to eat. I think that is a little annoying because I like to have a few minutes to look over the menu especially if I have never had certain kinds of food before. The waiters and waitress come around very quickly and seem to want you to be done with your food quickly so they can get you out and bring another party of people.

All the food there is freshly prepared and they serve beer too.

Like I said before the décor is a little old and could use a makeover. The restaurant is located below street level so it can be hard to find if it will be your first time going there. I would recommend going while it is semi light so that you can better detect where the restaurant is.

One thing that you can order which is so fresh and good is the Bok Choy. The Bok Choy comes with fresh garlic and oil. It only costs $5.75 and I like that because it is a light appetizer that will not fill you up too much before dinner is served. Another option is Beef Chow fun that costs $4.10, this beef is cut into small pieces and layered over rice or noodles. One of their more expensive dishes is the Lychee Duck which is $14.75. That is pretty good in my opinion. They are very fair in their prices and you will most likely have some to take with you since their portions are pretty generous!
