Review of HP Envy Laptop Series

HP Clone Offers Tough Competion to Mac

Sonya Galea
With a sleek design, awesome battery life, solid construction and excellent performance the HP Envy series laptops bring luxury to their users, but it is no secret that HP practically cloned their design and ergonomics from Mac.

Envy 13
The Envy laptops are framed in the same shiny black bezel of the Mac. With a .8 inches thickness and 3.74 pounds, aluminum body, chiclet keys, a button less track pad, the Envy 13 is so similar to Mac's Air that they are nearly indistinguishable. This laptop's body is magnesium coated with aluminum which feels good to touch without adding extra weight. The build of the Envy is not as rigid as the Mac, but still feels stronger than the average laptop.*2

The similarity ceases when you switch on the Envy, because the 410 nit display of the Envy 13 is simply mind blowing. This laptop's 13.1 inch WXGA display (82% color gamut) is simply impressive and is definitely brighter and clearer than any of its competition. It is one of the best I have seen on the market so far.

In addition, the optional slim fit extended life battery that snaps onto the bottom of the laptop more than doubles the standard 7 hour quoted battery life. At $1700 the envy 13 is certainly very tough competition for the Air priced at $1400. *1

Envy 15
At $1800 the Envy 15 also comes with a touch friendly aluminum coated body, chiclet keys and a button less track pad, but it is much more imposing than the Envy 13 at 5.18 pounds and slightly over 1 inch thickness. The graphics are not as stellar as its little brother, with 300nits for its 15.6 inch LCD, but with Intel next generation mobile core i7 processors, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 graphics and support for up to 16GB of RAM, it will outperform any other laptop on the market, so far. The 15 also has two hard drive bays, which you can fill with SSDs and high end Radeon HD 4830 graphics with 1GB of VRAM.*2
