Hungry-Man Grilled Bourbon Steak Strips Are Filling

Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez
On the search for a larger meal than I can find among the Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine product lines, I happened upon Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips. Under the banner of Hungry-Man Pub Favorites, the grilled bourbon steak strips come in a 16-ounce offer, served with a hearty portion of mashed potatoes and a side of carrots and broccoli. Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips looked tasty on the box, sloshing around in their onion and bourbon-tinged sauce, but were they as tasty as I had hoped they'd be?

Preparing Hungry Man Grilled Bourbon Steak Strips

Before trying the bourbon steak strips for yourself, you need to heat them up. As is the case with most frozen food products, heating up Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips is easy enough.

Conventional Oven

35 to 40 minutes in a conventional oven preheated to 350 degrees will get your Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips ready for eating.

Microwave

After cutting a slit in the film covering the broccoli and carrots, pop the Hungry-Man bourbon steak strips platter into your microwave for 4 minutes on high (try closer to 6 to 7 minutes if you're cooking in a 700-watt microwave).

After the first 4 minutes of cooking, stir the bourbon steak strips and mashed potatoes, then replace the platter into the microwave for another 4 minutes (or longer if cooking in a 700-watt microwave). Your bourbon steak strips will be ready to go after letting the meal stand in the microwave for 2 more minutes after cooking.

The Taste Test

So, how is the Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips meal? I give it a mostly positive review. The overall quality is good. The mashed potatoes in this meal are among the best I've had in such a frozen meal, though the bourbon sauce can help give the potatoes a little more kick. The broccoli and carrot medley is delicious. I was surprised to find the vegetables neither soggy nor crispy, but delightfully soft.

Now, as for the main feature of the meal: the grilled bourbon steak strips. The steak strips - about 1 inch to 2 inches long and maybe numbering one or two too few if you ask me - are generally tender. However, I did find a couple to be gristly. Maybe it was just my meal. Or maybe it's the cut. But at any rate, the steak is good and definitely worth trying if you like these types of meat-and-potatoes meals. The bourbon sauce really helped make this otherwise-average frozen steak dinner decently delicious.

Surprisingly Few Calories

I always look at the food labels on every frozen dinner I buy. While the sodium (1,720 mg) and saturated fat (8 grams) numbers are higher in the Hungry-Man grilled bourbon steak strips meal than I'd like to take in on one meal, the relatively low calorie number pleases: there are only 410 calories in the entire meal.

Another pleasant surprise comes from the 5 grams of dietary fiber in this Hungry-Man offering.

Vitamin A clocks in at 160% of one's typical daily recommended intake. Vitamin C registers here at 60%.
