Review of the Ionic Breeze Silent Air Purifier by Sharper Image

Is it the Best and Safest in Air Purification?

Lisa Davis
Whether I needed it or not, I fell for one of the hottest new consumer trends: air purification. At the top of its class in air purification is Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze Silent Air Purifier.

The name of the machine definitely holds true. It does operate virtually silent. Each stand alone unit cleans about 350 square feet of air, so to purify your whole home you would probably have to go into debt considering each unit's cost is $300-$350. However, I am satisfied with the machine overall. It does appear to make the air seem more fresh and clean. There is definitely a difference in quality even 20 minutes after the Ionic Breeze is turned on.

A lot of consumers, however, are passing up Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze these days over the heated debate of ozone emission. Let me assure you from someone who is big on researching my purchases. The ozone that this machine puts out is negligible. Plus, ozone is heavier than air so high concentrations at head height (where you breathe) is almost impossible. The amount the machine does emit falls well below the EPA TLV-TWA (threshold limit value-time weighted average) even if you were standing right next to it all day. However, for those of you still concerned about ozone, the Ionic Breeze comes with a removable front grill attachment with something they are calling OzoneGuard. Basically, the grill attachment has some sort of coating on it that instantly changes ozone molecules into oxygen on contact. So, no more worries!

My only complaint about the machine other than the fact that it is fairly pricey, is that I noticed when I ran the machine that it also "sucked" up good smells given off by my perfume and my gourmet candles. So, when you want guests to smell a pretty scent, it is best to leave the machine off because they definitely won't unless they stick their nose right in it. However, I am sure that is the case with every high-quality air purifier, so it is just something the owner has to deal with.

Lastly, one of the best features of the Ionic Breeze is that while it is expensive to purchase, it is very cheap to own. The machine uses very little electricity. Better yet, there are no filters to buy! The dirt is actually captured on a metal grid that simply needs to be rinsed off and cleaned when it is dirty. I was extremely surprised at how dirty mine was after just a week of use! Yuk! The dirt I removed from the grid was enough to make me a believer and it will do the same for you!

I have sharper image silent w/ ionizer(can be turn off) It has been on 24/7 for seven years, I clean it w/ damp sponge when the clean lights comes on.

I just recently cleaned it when the light comes on , I took it apart and blow out all the dust and both grids, glow light comes on.......It works like new.......I have asthma!!!!!!1...I am fine...

Does not cost anything to maintain..........I had the heppa....cost too much money .....

If you have asthma turn off the ionizer......and go for acupumture........it works like miracle restoring the balance in your lungs.......mine goes into remission until I get a cold or something.....

There are a lot of sites which are presenting the ionic breeze air purifiers. There are lots of controversies yet but from what I already read there are many good opinions of the users also. I think that the technology is better now and these products are now improved. I have a cousin with one and he is content. And when I go to him I sense the purity of the air too.

Why is Joe so bitter? What are Joe's credentials as a professional? I personally put a lot of stock in the experiences of an actual user that can relate their findings rather than a skeptic who takes aim at a product or an idea from afar. I am a NARTE certified ESD technician and I can tell you diffinatively, ionizers work. There are several industrial level manufacturers of ionizers including Desco, Ion Systems, and 3M that manufacture units for use in electronic assembly applications. They have been in use for over a decade and are still in use today. Accounts where I have personally installed them include Motorola, Celestica, etc. Results are tangible and quantifiable. Some cleane room applications require them for crying out loud. Sharper Image is the first home system I am aware of, but don't second guess the science.

You make me laugh. I never claimed to be a researcher at all. I was giving a USER product review. Not scientific information. When I said it appears to make the air seem more fresh and clean, I meant it. It makes the air smell better and fresher, not stale. This particular model has ozone guard which has different emmissions than the product that you're talking about in your lawsuit, so maybe you should do YOUR research there, joe. :-)

"It does appear to make the air seem more fresh and clean". Research? Facts? Completely counter to valid study done by CU, your opinion is based up latest TV commercial. As "someone who is big on researching my purchases" you didn't even read the results regarding this products lack of air cleaning. Ozone emission was menitioned in second article from CU, after Sharper Image lost their law suit and was required to pay CU over $500k. Keep your day job, leave the research to professionals.
