Review: Jimmy Dean D-Lights Ham Bowls

Steve Helmer

This past Sunday, I had to run to the store to pick up some ingredients for a ravioli dinner and, since it was still early enough in the morning, decided to find something for my wife and I to have for breakfast (the kids had already eaten).

The store I was at has kind of a limited breakfast selection and many of the items were a bit overpriced. And, because of this, I originally thought about shopping somewhere else. However, I noticed something different, Jimmy Dean D-Lights Ham Bowls, and, since they weren't overly expensive (under $3), I decided to pick up a couple of those.

I have had Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls in the past and, while not the best tasting breakfast I have ever had, they are usually pretty decent for a frozen breakfast. But, this particular one was not something I enjoyed very much.

I'm going to start out by saying, as far as convenience goes, these were as good as I was expecting. My wife and I only had to microwave the bowls for a few minutes each and the food was done. And, considering it was getting somewhat later in the morning by the time I got back (and we were both starving as a result), this was a good thing.

I'll also give this product a passing grade when it comes to being a filling breakfast. The eggs and ham were enough to keep me satisfied until lunch. And, I had a pretty late lunch on Sunday.

However, when it came to taste, these bowls really did leave a lot to be desired. First of all, there wasn't much ham in the bowls. I only had a few bites worth and my wife had slightly more. In addition, most of the pieces were pretty small.

This is kind of a big deal because, like most frozen breakfasts, the eggs were a bit rubbery and bland. I can say the same thing about the eggs in other Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls. But, with those bowls, the quantity and taste of the meat makes up for it. Since there was so little ham in these bowls (and the ham didn't have much flavor either), I couldn't say that about this variety.

I think I will still continue to buy Jimmy Dean breakfast bowls in the future. But, this will be the last time I buy the company's D-Lights Ham Bowls because they just don't live up to my expectations.
