Review: Jumbo's Family Restaurant in Lynchburg, VA

Jumbo's Family Restaurant is a little country restaurant on the outskirts of the city of Lynchburg on Richmond Highway (460 East) in Virginia. A lot of people jokingly call the place Dumbo's because there is an elephant on their sign. As a child, I was always fascinated with the place because of that sign. It really does attract attention from everyone.

The time before the last time I ate there, I went with my grandmother. This is her favorite restaurant because it is typically not crowded and she enjoys the food. It is a cheap place to eat where you can also sit down and order. I ordered the ribeye sandwich, and it was rather awful. They brought us rolls that were rather good. But I think you only get rolls if you order something that comes with them. That ribeye sandwich has been taken off the menu. I guess they realized that it wasn't very good.

The last time I ate at Jumbo's was with my grandmother, father, and half brother. I was at my father's house and he invited me to join them. This time, I ordered the seafood platter for $9.25. With the exception of a couple of restaurants, I typically like to always order something different. The seafood platter is one of those kinds of dishes where everything is fried. It was really good. However, it made me sick before we even left the restaurant. My grandmother commented that of course that happened with what I ordered.

My family told the waitress that I was in the bathroom because the food made me sick. It was really embarrassing, but what can you say in a situation like that. Little kids tend to tell everything that they know. When I returned to the table, I was rather surprised that I wasn't offered a free meal, coupons, something. She did ask how I was doing. If the waitress is going to be all up in your business like that, you should get something free.

Jumbo's is more of a hangout for the fifty-five plus age group from what I have noticed. Mostly, these people seem to go there to socialize. Jumbo's menu is mostly tailored to older people as well. For example, the side dishes aren't really seasoned much.

I recommend this restaurant with hesitation. It's really just a place to order country-style food and I don't find it all that impressive. My sister on the other hand, she highly recommends this restaurant and has eaten there more times than I have. She says that their oysters are very good. I believe that it is worth trying at least once.
