Review of Kellogg's Special K Low Fat Granola

I like a good granola cereal. I also frequently buy several products in the Kellogg's Special K product line. When Kellogg's started advertising its new Special K Low Fat Granola, I knew I should give it a try. I paid $3.20 for a 19.5-ounce box at my local supermarket and thought it was a fair price.

This is a very simple granola. Whole grain oats are the main ingredient; other grains include oat bran, rice, soluble wheat fiber, and soy grits. This cereal contains several sweeteners, including sugar, corn syrup, honey, and molasses. I thought I tasted cinnamon, but it isn't specifically mentioned as being an ingredient; if it's in there, it must fall under "natural flavor."

Kellogg's Special K Low Fat Granola has a good texture. The clusters are big but not huge, and they crumble easily instead of being hard enough to hurt my teeth. This probably accounts for the large amount of loose granola (as opposed to clusters) in the box.

This granola is somewhat plain for my tastes. I would have preferred that it include some almonds. However, almonds would increase the fat content, which is probably why they're not part of this low-fat recipe. As an alternative, dates or golden raisins would be nice but would increase the sugar content. Since this cereal is part of the Special K product line, I can understand why it doesn't contain these extras. I always have the option of buying them separately and adding them to my cereal bowl.

A dry serving of Kellogg's Special K Low Fat Granola contains 190 calories, 25 of which are from fat. Each serving contains 3 grams of fat, of which .5 gram is saturated fat. There are 5 grams of fiber in each serving, split into 2 grams of soluble and 3 grams of insoluble fiber. This granola also has 3 grams of protein.

Kellogg's Special K Low Fat Granola is a good addition to the Special K product line. It is also a good choice for those seeking a simple granola. Those with food allergies and sensitivities should be aware that it contains soy, wheat, and corn ingredients, including high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
