Review of Kris Allen's Final Performance on American Idol

The highly anticipated night for all American Idol fans finally came with Kris Allen in the finals. To say that I am surprised would be an understatement. I always thought that Danny Gokey or Allison Iraheta would be along side Adam in the final two. Well, clearly, on American Idol, anything goes. Kris Allen, I must admit, has been the underdog in the competition but he quietly made his way to the top with his Southern charm and boy-next-door looks.

Kris started his line up of performances with "Ain't No Sunshine", a hit by Bill Withers. His rendition on piano was beautiful. I loved it. His soothing voice actually surprised me as he carried the song very well. I was sort of expecting him to be on with his guitar but the piano was equally good. At least it was something different. After he sang, I thought, maybe, just maybe he has a chance against Adam. After all, he is cute. He has the boy-next-door type of face and he's like America's sweetheart with his pearly white smile and boyish good looks.

Kris' second song was the hit by the very talented Mr. Marvin Gaye, "What's going on?" which is one of my favorites. I didn't quite expect Kris to come on and sing soul or R&B songs. He's always been the country/ acoustic type of performer. His performance was "okay". He was able to sing but it was nothing out of the ordinary. Some of the judges said that the song was too laid back for the finals. I would have to agree. As the judges were doing their regular critiquing, Kris' face seemed to turn a bit awry and he looked as though he was starting to lose confidence in himself. He was no longer sporting his dashing smile by the end of the judges' comments.

Kris' last song for the night was "No Boundaries" written by none other than the very talented, Ms. Kara DioGuardi. I believe Ms. DioGuardi deserves more credit for her work. She's written a number of hits to date and I was pleasantly surprised to hear her sing. She actually has a beautiful voice herself.

I did not know the song but Adam was first to perform. So after watching Adam, of course, if Adam goes first, it's pretty tough to top his performance, so when Kris came on, his performance sort of fell flat. In the first line of the song, Kris went quite pitchy and he was quite pitchy in many parts of the song 'til the end. Simon once again did not practice any restraint with his criticism leaving the impression that Adam is the winner.

Of course, anything goes on American Idol. Kris has always been the underdog so I guess we'll have to wait for the results tomorrow.
