Review of Krusteaz Almond Poppyseed Supreme Muffin Mix

Brad Kamer

I am a big fan of instant quick bread and muffin mix products. I always prefer the homemade baked goods such as blueberry or banana nut breads that are void of preservatives and trans fats. Sometimes, hectic schedules call for desperate measures so I opt for the easy prep baking aisle at the supermarket.

After perusing this aisle recently, I decided to try out Krusteaz Almond Poppyseed Supreme mix. After getting burned out on cereal bars and bagels, I considered this a good easy to make alternative. Selecting the Krusteaz product line was a no brainer since I have successfully tried out the pancake mixes sold by this company.

Preparation

The muffin mix is sold in a 17 ounce box and includes a small envelope containing the poppy seeds. As this is pretty much a complete mix, the only other ingredients required is one egg and some water. The preparation and baking instructions allow making this as either muffins or a quick bread. I opted to make the quick bread since there is a lower likelihood of the baked product being excessively dry as muffins tend to get. The process was simple as the mix was added to the egg and water with the poppy seeds eventually being folded in at the end. The batter was then poured into a greased loaf pan and placed into a 350 degree oven and baked for approximately fifty minutes. The final step involved insertion of a toothpick to check for doneness. Preparation was relatively painless as I only incurred the burden of cleaning a mixing bowl, wooden spoon, measuring cup, and eventually the bread pan.

Taste

The final ten minutes of baking created a nice almond aroma that filled the entire house. The finished quick bread yielded a nice brown exterior and I was pleased not a single portion of this bread was burned. As I sliced the bread the following morning, I witnessed a generous quantity of poppy seeds. The balance of taste yielded more almond flavor than poppy seed. The bread proved to be surprisingly moist as I had my doubts since this recipe did not call for any kind of vegetable oils to be added during the preparation phase. I did use shortening to grease the pan, but that step was strictly to prevent sticking and did not contribute to the moistness of the bread. Overall, the flavor and texture were decent.

Price

The box of Krusteaz Almond Poppyseed Supreme Muffin Mix cost $2.89 for one package. There was other muffin mixes about forty to fifty cents cheaper, though I did not see any almond poppyseed flavors offered by the competition at the time I went shopping. I would say this price is average for a box of muffin mix. I would certainly pay this price again if there are no other almond poppyseed brands available.

Overall Satisfaction

I like the convenience of this morning almond poppyseed treat as it is only 170 calories per serving. The negative nutritional value is attributed to one gram of trans fat. I had to overlook this little nuisance and excused the guilt as I do not consume these muffins on a daily basis. Overall, I appreciated the ease of preparation and quality bakery fresh taste that came with this Krusteaz product. It is safe to assume I will be purchasing this product again in the near future. Hopefully, I can catch it at a sale price and stock up.
