Review: Lactulose Solution

Charlene Collins
Lactulose is a thick, clear solution prescribed for constipation. It is very effective in softening the stool by adding water into the colon. This laxative works where others won't. My daughter suffers with chronic constipation. She had to have enemas from the time she was a few months old till the present. She is now 37 years old and she still cannot go to the bathroom on her own. For some reason she has had a lazy bowl from the time she was born. No one ever investigated to see what was causing her problem. As a mother, I asked the doctors to check her. I worried that something was wrong with her bowels. When she did go, her stool was too wide to go down the toilet, and I had to cut them up with a tongue blade for the stool to go down.

Several years ago she was complaining of her stomach hurting, and when I asked her when her bowels moved, she admitted that they had not moved in a couple of weeks. I took her on to the emergency room and they X-rayed her to find that she was packed full. At that time they gave her enemas and citrate of magnesia, which worked to clean her out.

Now many years later she is in bad shape again. For the last 6 weeks she has not been able to use the bathroom. Laxatives did not work, and the enemas were only slightly effective. She was in constant pain, and nauseated all the time. She complained to her doctor and she advised for her to take an enema every day for 3 days and then she was advised to start taking Miralax. She only got minimal results from the enemas and the Miralax never worked. She still couldn't go. More than a week later, still without a bowel movement, my daughter complained again to the doctor. This time the doctor ordered Lactulose Solution, in which she takes 2 teaspoons a day. It works like a charm. She has been going every day, sometimes more than once a day.

Lactusose comes in a solution like I just mentioned and it also comes in crystal form and it is dispensed in packets. If you buy it in either form, you can mix it with water or fruit juice, milk, ice cream, or pudding. Lactulose has a fairly sweet taste, I'm not saying it tastes good, but it is sweet. My daughter just swallows it, rather than mixing it with anything, but then follows it with a full glass of water. I would recommend Lactulose to anyone who has a chronic problem with constipation. Lactulose works, where other products don't.
