While vacationing recently on the beautiful island of Kauai, my husband had to try Lappert's Ice Cream. We had seen it on a travelogue on the Travel Channel and on some forgotten cooking show on the Food Network. Now I'm allergic to dairy, so I stuck with trying different flavors of the more famous "Hawaiian Shaved Ice" for various cooling off treats, but hubby has always loved ice cream and there we were, right in Old Town Koloa standing right in front of it. How could we not go in for a peek?

Lappert's also has other goodies on hand-brownies, cookies, muffins and my favorite way to linger COFFEE! Now both of us were happy. This was later in the afternoon on a day where we had taken in the Salt Pond tidepools, Spouting Horn, the awe-inspiring and breath-taking Waimea Canyon. My significant other half had also had a lunch of coconut shrimp and fries at another local hangout called the Shrimp Station. That's another review! We were ready for a bit of a pick-me-up before dinner.

With that said, we entered the aromatic shop. It was packed. I smelled the Kona coffee flavored with chocolate and cinnamon and asked for a large, leaving my husband to wait in line and order while I grabbed a table on the back patio. I began talking to a lovely couple from the midwest. They had also heard about the famous ice cream spot on the Travel Channel. Seems a lot of us self-declared foodies were in attendance as at least three other couples overheard us and nodded. While waiting for our orders, we all switched cameras and oohed and aahed at the pictures we had taken during our stay.

My husband arrived and joined the newly formed party. He chose a waffle cone dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkles and had it filled with the flavors of Kauai Estate Coffee and Kauai Chocolate with macademias. After a few tastes, he had to admit, the ice cream was indeed some of the best he had ever had. The rest of the taste testers in the crowd chimed in with groans of utter delight as well. I had to ask, what was so special?

Adjectives started being tossed around. Rich, decadent, smooth, full and silky. Everyone agreed, what ever flavors they had tried, from the Coffee to the coconut-pineapple, to the various forms of chocolate and macademia filled versions, all tasted exactly like what they had ordered. Fresh. Most didn't care if they even had dinner-this was heaven enough!

Now I wasn't the only one who didn't have a cone or bowl in front of them. I must say, my coffee was smooth-not bitter like the cup that usually greets you at one of the major coffee stands that inhabit most corners of cities today. I usually put in a packet of sugar substitute, but this coffee was good enough that the thought didn't occur to me. I realized how much I was enjoying my latest cup of joe about half way through! Some of our little group went for the pastries. I really wanted to try the oatmeal raisin I saw, but realized if I had, I'd probably not want to put on my bathingsuit the next day. But those who tried the brownies were moaning over the depth of the taste of chocolate. One tried the pineapple coconut bar (probably closest to the island's version of a lemon bar) and declared it one of the best things she had tasted on her entire trip.

On the whole, obviously our little group of about 10 would definitely recommend stopping at Lappert's for just about anything they have to offer. Enjoy!
