Review: Las Brisas Restaurant, Authentic Mexican Food in Port Chester, New York

At dinner time the dining room at Las Brisas restaurant in Port Chester is packed. Young men sit at the counter, and families eat in the booths. Almost everyone in the restaurant is speaking Spanish. Blue-collar workers, artists and college students from Port Chester, Purchase, and White Plains come to Las Brisas for cheap, authentic, delicious Mexican food served without frills. At Las Brisas you seat yourself, and order from the menu on the wall. The menu of Mexican standards is written mostly in Spanish, though anyone who knows that frijoles means beans and bistec means steak shouldn't have a problem ordering.

Las Brisas: Authentic, Delicious, Cheap Mexican Food Near White Plains

I went to Las Brisas with two friends, one of them a Mexican food loving Texan who was skeptical of Mexican restaurants in the White Plains area. She ordered for all of us. We got two pork tacos, two tamales with red sauce, a chorizo torta, and a order of chicken enchiladas with green sauce. To drink, we ordered horchata, a sweet Mexican drink made with rice, cinnamon and almonds.

All of the food was wonderful. My friends gravitated toward the torta, a huge sandwich of ground chorizo, vegetables and cheese on a fresh tasting roll. I loved the perfectly simple tacos with grilled pork, cilantro and lemon wedges. I also liked the flavorful tamales. We all enjoyed the enchiladas, which were nicely spicy. According to the menu "picante" is optional, so if you want your food spicier you can just ask. We ate until we were stuffed and carried away lots of leftovers, and our bill came to thirty five dollars. Las Brisas is a restaurant where you get more than your money's worth in delicious, authentic Mexican food. Even our Texan admitted she was wrong about Mexican restaurants near White Plains: she says that the food at Las Brisas is as good and authentic as the food she eats in Mexican restaurants at home.

Service at Las Brisas can be a little slow, but the lady behind the counter is extremely nice, and no one tries to rush you out the door. Although the atmosphere at Las Brisas is no-fuss, that only makes it more comfortable: Las Brisas is a local Port Chester restaurant where you can feel at home.
