So the other day when we had some unexpected company [my parents], we needed a quick lunch. Everyone was hungry and it was up to me to make something for everyone because it was my turn to cook. I live with my adult daughter and her three young sons and we take turns cooking.
We had a large can of Las Palmas Enchilada Sauce that we had gotten from the local food pantry and since all I had to do was open the can and use it, it seemed like a good idea to make enchiladas with it. My mom helped me by cooking some hamburger and we both grated some cheese. I cut an onion to add to the enchiladas and I started layering the corn tortillas with cheese, hamburger meat, onion, sauce, tortilla, sauce, cheese, hamburger meat, until everything was gone and I ended up with sauce on top and added cheese. I didn't individually roll the enchiladas because that takes more time! :-) With my mom's help, everything went pretty fast and then I popped the tray of enchiladas into the microwave for ten minutes.
After the ten minutes, everything was hot and the cheese was melted and it looked absolutely delicious! I cut the enchiladas and mom and I started dishing up plates of food and cups of iced tea for all the adults.
The complaints started immediately. My adult daughter began by saying that the taste reminded her of the enchiladas she'd had and HATED at the private church school that she went to when growing up.
Then came dad's complaints, he said they reminded him of institution food like at the rest home where grandma lives when they go over to visit her and stay and eat in the cafeteria there with her.
Mom said they were hot and burned her tongue [she has problems with her tongue and spicy food is painful for her].
And I have to admit that I complained too. The flavor of the sauce was hot and spicy and sort of bitter. I didn't like it at all. I did go ahead and eat it because frankly we don't get to waste food unless its spoiled and inedible. But I have to tell you, it was tempting to throw all the enchiladas into the trash!
Next time we have enchiladas, we will be using a package mix and will not ever use canned sauce again. I can not recommend Las Palmas Enchilada Sauce since it was not a success for me and my family. We don't even consider it to be worth the price of FREE that we didn't pay for it!

Post a CommentAdd one more to the list of those who bought, tasted and threw it out without using the Las Palmas Enchilada sauce. The first can I opened and tasted, I also thought might be a bad batch so I dumped it and opened the second one...same thing. These were the large cans. About a year later my husband bought a 10 oz. can not realizing that it was the brand we had a problem with before. Tonight I opened it and because I was suspicious, I finger tasted it and almost barfed. The date had not expired so this time I emailed the company with the bar code and Best used by date. Not sure if I'll hear from them but will post if I do. I made my sauce from scratch and glad I didn't waste all those ingredients. My advice - stay away from this brand.
I just tried it for the worst time. So very terrible. I thought to myself, 'Self, this tastes like water with chili powder'. Checked the ingredients, and sure enough, thats most of it. Simply awful.
I just threw ours away. I thought it may have been recalled because it tasted soooo bad. It was really "tinny" tasting. Yuk!
I can't believe these reviews. I'm looking all over for this sauce (moved recently). I put tomato sauce In my filling. I probably wouldn't like It If I just used Las Palmas, without It my enchiladas don't have that authentic flavor.
I completely agree with CSherlin...it is a matter of taste and chili only! Las Palmas is our fav too.
We used Las Palmas for the first time for dinner tonight. We used the Mild variety. Everyone in the family had the same reaction as this author. It was the bitterness and aftertaste that we hated. In fact, my wife wondered if it had gone bad or something. She thought they surely didn't intend for it to taste like that.
We will never be buying it again.
It's all a matter of taste but I wonder if Ms. Wilson and her family's dislike of this product can be summed up in one word: Tomato. Those of used to the taste of Enchiladas "border" style do not want tomatoes anywhere near our Enchilada sauce: chili only, please. For us it ruins the taste but in other parts of the country, "tomatofied" sauce is the favorite of everyone. Las Palmas, lacking tomato's, continues to be one of our favorites along with equally tomatoless La Victoria.
Las Palmas=yuch
I agree with you. I don't think it tastes good either.
It sure looked good in the photo. It's too bad it didn't taste good, though.
