However this film dovetails the life of Robin Hood before he was declared an outlaw by King john. It traces the life of the Archer( Robin Lonsdale) from the time he was along with Richard the lion heart to the time he returns to England and is finally declared an outlaw by the King.
The film is an authentic portrayal of the period( 12 th century) when King Richard fought against the Moslems and Saladin. It brings out the subtle and devious character of king John as well as the patriotism of the English middle class and their love for England.
The Pivotal role of Robin is played by Russell Crowe of Gladiator fame. He certainly breathes life into the role of Robin and turns in a stupendous performance. There is no doubt that Russell is one of the breed of actors who work hard at portraying their roles. The romantic interest in the movie is held together by Cate Blanchett as maid Marion. She looks a thoroughbred and lovely English girl who oozes sex appeal at all times. The scenes where she perforce accepts Robin as her husband and yet does not allow him to touch her are excellently portrayed. The later development of her character where she genuinely starts loving Robin is her forte.
Old timer actor Max Von Sydow as Marion's blind father Sir Walter Loxley turns in an excellent performance .He may have aged but he is vintage material even at his present age, the movie has crisp editing and the direction is good. The scenes where he accepts Robin as his son in-law after the death of his son are very well portrayed .Oscar Isaac As king John also gives a polished performance,
The movie has had a global release and the box office reports are encouraging. Director Ridley Scott certainly deserves credit for creating an excellent movie about that part of the life of Robin hood which is not so well known or publicized. All in all it is an excellent movie and deserves a watch.
